Thad Matta, Ohio State head coach
On the play of the bench
“It started with Trey [McDonald], who came off the bench and did what he needed to do: play great post defense and provide great energy. All of those guys played very well and very cohesively.”

On the key to LaQuinton Ross becoming a consistent contributor
“He needs to focus on all of the little aspects of the game, and to his credit he has done that recently and been very tuned-in in practice and in games. He is playing his best basketball.”

On multiple scoring options
“The best teams I’ve coached are the ones that have multiple scoring options. The ’07 team was a great example of that. Night-to-night, you never knew who would lead you in scoring.”

Deshaun Thomas, junior forward
On four different players scoring double figures
“We passed the ball really well and different guys stepped up to hit shots.”

On excitement over his assist to Aaron Craft
“It is really just me becoming a better player and learning to become more of an impact player without always shooting. I trust these guys to make shots so I make the extra pass. It starts in practice and carries over to the games.”

Lenzelle Smith, Jr., junior guard
On defensive intensity
“Coach Matta wants good defense to be the identity of this team so we do a lot of defensive drills in practice. Right now as a team we’re playing together well on the defensive end of the floor.”

On rotation of players
“We are all going to be in foul trouble at some point during the season so it is important to rotate guys in and let them get confidence early in the season. When we have a lot of guys with confidence we are a scary team.”

Dan Monson, Long Beach State head coach
On his team’s performance
“It’s a work in progress and we’ve got a long way to go. Ohio State is a very good basketball team. I was happy with how hard we fought, but you’re not going to play well until you consistently have the same effort that we had in the first half. The second half was a huge disappointment.”

On Ohio State’s defense
“Defensively they just got into us and frustrated us. [Aaron] Craft is as good of an on-ball defender as anyone in the country. Mike [Caffey] is going to be a good point guard for us, but you have to give all the credit to Aaron.”

On his team’s challenging non-conference schedule
“You have to put kids in adverse situations to see how they react. It’s hard but they need to figure it out. We try to embrace that. We’re trying to get mentally tougher and this team has got to grow up a little bit.”
