POSTGAME QUOTES
No. 5 Ohio State (8-0) 74, Central Connecticut St. 56 (2-6)
Dec. 7, 2013
Value City Arena – Columbus, Ohio
Attendance: 13,640

Thad Matta, Ohio State head coach
On playing small
“They went small and we just felt it was the line-up that would match up best with them. It gave us the most energy.”

On first half runs for both teams
“We got off to a hot start. Then I pulled some guys and probably sat them for longer than I should have because when they checked back in they did not have the same level of intensity.”

On Ohio State’s energy
“We were not clicking on all cylinders for 40 minutes like we needed to be. We just didn’t execute that well, but whenever we did we got the easy shots we were looking for.”

On improving for the next game
“This is one we have to learn from and we must be a better basketball team in our game Wednesday night.”

LaQuinton Ross, junior forward
On Coach Matta’s attitude at halftime
“It was a little bit of sarcasm and anger at the same time. He tried to keep cool because he feels like we are a veteran basketball team. The mistakes we made we shouldn't have made. ”

On the benefits of going small on defense
“We just felt that when we went small on the defensive end we were able to switch more.  Sam and I were able to switch at the four and five. We were able to help out on the guards more because we were able to get back.”

Lenzelle Smith Jr., senior guard
On struggling to pull away from CCSU
“I just feel that we didn't do some things well that we usually do. We just didn't play our game today. It made the game a lot harder than it should have been."

Howie Dickenman, Central Connecticut St. head coach
On the Blue Devils’ performance
“We wanted to gain some respect and I think we gained some respect today. We committed a minimum amount of fouls, and I thought we defended their 3-point shot very well. We made some mistakes, certainly, but we hustled and played with as much intensity as we’ve played all year.”

On penetrating the Buckeye defense
We have a couple of freshmen who when they go they don't stop.  When they get a hole to the basket, they drive and see what happens. We’re not a good outside shooting team, but we’re better at driving to the basket.”

On what Central Connecticut St. gains from this game
“At some point, good teams get a turning point in their season while bad teams never a have turning point. We’ve been preaching to our team that this a turning point game for us. I think we will benefit from playing with this amount of energy and intensity.”
