POSTGAME QUOTES
No. 8 Ohio State 63, American 52
Nov. 20, 2013
Value City Arena – Columbus, Ohio
Attendance: 14,639

Thad Matta, Ohio State head coach
On the slow start to the first half
“I think a lot had to do with us defending for so long. We were just slow to balls, lacked spacing, were running on top of each other and didn’t have it at the level we needed to.”

On the play of Amir Williams
“I’ve seen him more energized and aggressive this season. He has also been dominating in practice. Tonight I really loved seeing his patience.”

On Ohio State’s 3-point shooting
“Shooting can be contagious. I would like this team to be able to shoot the three at a higher percentage.”

On team’s confidence when shooting
“A lot of shooting is confidence and having the metal toughness to step up and consistently do things right. Also, the great shooting teams first have to be great passing times and tonight we made some bad passes to open shooters.”

Shannon Scott, junior guard
On his steal to open the second half
“That was my first time doing that. I think I caught the guard of guard. He didn’t see me coming.”

On Ohio State’s scoring struggles in the first half
“I think we had a lot of great looks, but we were not knocking them down. We have to keep coming into practice everyday and putting up shots up in order to make those game-time shots.”

Amir Williams, junior center
On scoring a career-high 16 points
“I have been working really hard on my moves in the post and it is finally starting to pay off. I am building up my confidence and hope to continue improving and making those baskets.”

On improving for his junior season
“The work we did in the off-season is the reason my game has improved. I am taking shots I wouldn’t normally take. I am better prepared mentally as well.”

Mike Brennan, American University head coach
On the play of the Buckeyes
“Ohio State is a good team and you have to do a lot to beat a team like that. We had 27 turnovers and gave up 17 offensive rebounds, and I think that had a lot to do with the loss. They’re loaded with a lot of weapons.”

On the Eagle defense in the first half
“I think we did a good job of keeping it tight defensively, helping each other, and contesting shots. I think they missed some shots they normally make too. We rebounded a little bit too.”

On the potential of the American squad
“I’m just looking at our team and trying to get better with each game. I don’t think we played particularly well. We turned the ball over a ton. As long as we keep improving and getting better each guy, each day, we’ll be a different team.”
