COLUMBUS, Ohio – Behind a complete-game shutout from Travis Lakins, Gray topped Scarlet 5-0 to take a 3-0 lead in the Scarlet and Gray World Series Monday evening at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium.
Gray starter Travis Lakins and Scarlet starter Ryan Riga put zeroes up on the board the first three innings until Gray was able to plate a run off Riga in the bottom of the fourth. Troy Kuhn reached on an error to lead off the inning, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ronnie Dawson and scored on a single up the middle by Jacob Bosiokovic for the 1-0 lead.
Gray then blew it open in the bottom of the sixth when Craig Nennig and Dawson each reached on singles and Bosiokovic followed with a double down the left-field line off reliever Michael Koltak to plate Nennig. After Koltak intentionally walked Aaron Gretz to load the bases, the freshman right-hander struck out Jake Brobst for the second out of the inning. However, after Michael Horesjei came on in relief, Tanner Tully laced a single into left to score Dawson and Bosiokovic. Tim Wetzel followed with a single off Tyler Giannonatti to score Gretz to extend the lead to 5-0 and cap the scoring.
In the meantime, Lakins was mowing down Scarlet hitters, retiring 14 consecutive hitters before back-to-back one-out singles by Jalen Washington and Pat Porter in the top of the seventh. The freshman then bounced back to strike out Zach Ratcliff and Ryan Leffel for the complete-game shutout.
Lakins allowed three hits while striking out five in 7.0 innings to pick up the win while Riga suffered the loss, allowing two earned runs over 5.1 innings. Bosiokovic finished the night 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.
The teams play Game 4 at 6 p.m. Thursday at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium.
