CHILLICOTHE, Ohio – Gray topped Scarlet, 7-3, Saturday evening in Game 4 of the Scarlet and Gray World Series Saturday evening at V.A. Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe.
After a scoreless top of the first, Gray took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the frame. Tim Wetzel reached on an error to lead off the inning and came around to score on a wild pitch by Scarlet starter Brian King. Brad Hallberg, who had reached on an error, then plated the second run when Mike Carroll reached on a Scarlet miscue.
Scarlet bounced back to cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the second when Zach Ratcliff reached on a two-out error and scored on a doubled to left-center by Matt Emge. Scarlet rallied again in the top of the third, putting runners at the corners with nobody out, but Gray starter Brett McKinney picked Joe Ciamacco off first for the first out, induced a come-backer by Patrick Porter for the second out and rolled a groundout to short by Jacob Bosiokovic to preserve the 2-1 advantage.
Scarlet then took the lead in the top of the fourth when singles by Ratcliff and Austin Achter put runners on first and second with two down and a double to right-center by Jacob Brobst drove both in for the 3-2 lead.
Gray responded in the bottom of the frame, using three hits and a trio of Scarlet errors to plate five runs to move ahead 7-3 after four innings.
Carroll finished with a pair of hits for Gray while Brobst, Ratcliff, Emge and Achter each tallied multi-hit games for Scarlet.
The teams wrap up the Scarlet and Gray World Series at 6 p.m. Monday at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium.
