COLUMBUS, Ohio – Scarlet defeated Gray, 3-0, to sweep the best-of-five Scarlet and Gray World Series Friday Night at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium. The team will still play the final two games, Saturday in Chillicothe, and back home in Columbus Monday.
Scarlet took the early 1-0 lead in the second inning when Zach Ratcliff singled with two down, moved to third on a single by Ryan Wonders and came around to score on a throwing error. Scarlet added to its lead with a pair in the top of the third, taking advantage of singles by Ryan Cypret, Jacob Bosiokovic and Ratcliff and another Gray error to plate two more unearned runs to push the advantage to 3-0.
Gray threatened to cut into the Scarlet lead in the bottom of the fifth when Ryan Leffel singled to lead off the inning and Mike Carroll followed with a single through the right side, but right-fielder Patrick Porter came up throwing and cut Leffel down at third to prevent the rally and preserve the 3-0 lead.
The fifth ended up being the final inning on the mound for Scarlet starter Luke McGee. The freshman tossed five scoreless, allowing three hits while striking out four to pick up the win.
Ratcliff and Wonders each led Scarlet with a pair of hits.
The teams will play Game 4 of the series at 5 p.m. Saturday at V.A. Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe.
