Buckeyes Host UNCG in Three-Game Series in Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball team continues its nine-game homestand with a three-game, non-conference series against UNC Greensboro Friday-Sunday at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium. Game one is set for 6:35 p.m. Friday. The middle game is slated for 3:05 p.m. Saturday before the series wraps up at 1:05 p.m. Sunday from the campus of The Ohio State University. This weekend marks the first meeting between the two schools.

LEADING OFF

  • Ohio State is 15-22 overall and 4-8 in Big Ten play. The Buckeyes hold a 4-9 record at Bill Davis Stadium.
  • Last time out, the Buckeyes fell, 8-1, against Northern Kentucky on Wednesday night in Columbus.
  • Rookie Dominic Canzone leads the Buckeyes with a .341 average at the dish. Canzone was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week April 10.
  • The OSU pitching staff has seen 16 different arms on the mound this year. Kinker is 1-0 with a 2.76 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 29.1 innings pitched in 16 relief appearances.
  • Ohio State is hitting .241 as a team with 58 doubles, 12 triples, 31 home runs and 34 stolen bases.
  • The OSU pitching staff has combined for a 4.95 ERA with 266 strikeouts in 325.1 innings pitched.
  • The 2017 campaign marks the 134th season of Ohio State baseball and 21st at Bill Davis Stadium.
  • The team is led by seventh-year head coach Greg Beals, who led the Buckeyes to a Big Ten tournament championship and NCAA Regional in 2016.
  • The team is led by a five-member senior class that includes four fifth-year seniors: Jake Post, Shea Murray, Joe Stoll and Zach Ratcliff.
  • Senior infielder Jalen Washington and redshirt junior pitcher Adam Niemeyer were both named captains for the Scarlet and Gray. Washington was recently named a Senior CLASS Award Candidate.
  • Seth Kinker was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Preseason Stopper of the Year Watch List.
  • Yianni Pavlopoulos joined Washington and Kinker on the B1G Players to Watch List.
  • Ohio State welcomed 15 newcomers to the 35-man roster, including seven junior college transfers.
  • The Buckeyes went 3-3 in road games and 5-5 in neutral site contests to begin the season. Highlighting the early part of the schedule were ranked wins over No. 5 Oregon State (6-1; Feb. 24) and No. 24 FGCU (5-4, March 12).

OHIO STATE AS OF LATE
Ohio State is looking to build some momentum out of conference before a key Big ten series April 28-30 vs. Nebraska. The Buckeyes are 1-4 in their last five games. The Scarlet and Gray won the final game of a three-game road set at Michigan State last weekend, posting a season-high 21 hits in a 13-8 win in East Lansing, Mich. Dominic Canzone is hitting .421 with two doubles, one triple, one home run and four RBI in his last five games.

21st SEASON AT BILL DAVIS STADIUM
Ohio State is 341-174 all-time at Bill Davis Stadium for a fine .665 winning percentage. Ohio State is 178-107 vs. the Big Ten Conference at home. The Buckeyes went 23-4 at home last year for the fifth-most home wins in school history. 

IN THE BIG TEN
Ohio State currently sits in ninth place heading into its bye weekend from Big Ten play with a 4-8 ledger. Ohio State ranks second in the league in triples (12), third in walks (162) and fifth in home runs (31). The Buckeye pitching staff has a 4.95 ERA, which is eighth-best in the conference, while striking out 266 hitters, good for fifth in the league. Tre’ Gantt is second in the Big Ten in walks (26). Jalen Washington is tied for fourth in triples (3) and hit by pitches (13). Noah McGowan and Zach Ratcliff each have five home runs, which is tied for 15th in the conference. On the mound, Jake Post is tenth in ERA (3.38). He has struck out 20 hitters looking, which is tied for second in the Big Ten.

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
UNCG is 22-14 overall and 8-4 in Southern Conference play this year. The Spartans are hitting .324 as a team which is seventh in the country. The team leads the nation in triples with 29 on the year. Freshman Caleb Webster has a .436 average, which ranks third in the nation. Webster has collected 11 doubles with 30 RBI. He is currently the toughest to strikeout in the country with only three strikeouts in 110 at-bats (36.7).  The UNCG pitching staff has a 5.38 ERA with 315 strikeouts in 318.0 IP. Matt Frisbee is 5-2 with a 3.61 ERA with 37 strikeouts and 14 walks in 52.1 innings of work.

  • Ohio State is 13-7 when scoring first and 13-1 when leading after eight innings.
  • The Buckeyes are 9-4 when outhitting their opponents.
  • Tre’ Gantt leads the team with 12 multi-hit games.
  • Jalen Washington has a team-high six multi-RBI games this season.
  • Dominic Canzone is hitting .432 (16-for-37) in his last 10 games.
  • Seth Kinker has made 71 career appearances, which is tied for 12th in the OSU career appearances list.
  • Jacob Barnwell is hitting .364 (10-for-32) with two outs.

BIG TEN FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
Dominic Canzone
was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the conference office announced April 13. The native of Sagamore Hills, Ohio, Canzone led the Buckeyes to a 3-1 mark last week, including a road series win in Happy Valley. Canzone hit .412 (7-for-17) with two runs scored, double, home run, seven RBI and stolen base at the plate, becoming the first OSU rookie to win freshman of the week since Brady Cherry in 2016.

SENIOR CLASS AWARD CANDIDATE
Jalen Washington
, a senior captain and infielder on the Ohio State baseball team, is a candidate for the 2017 Senior CLASS Award, the organization announced March 27. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as a Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. Washington is in his second year as captain for the Buckeyes. The native of Twinsburg, Ohio, Washington had played in 122 career games with 105 career starts and had registered 20 doubles, three triples, eight home runs,68 RBI, 26 stolen bases, 58 runs scored and 94 hits in his career. Washington is a young man of very high character. He is a two-time captain, voted on by his teammates, and his leadership is invaluable to upholding the high standards at The Ohio State University and in the baseball program. He has passed out shoes to children in schools in Columbus area and took a mission trip to Bolivia with Soles4Souls. During the trip, he participated in a one-week shoe drive, passing out shoes to schools, orphanages, and underprivileged children and families. He was a member of the Big Ten All-Tournament Team in 2016 and was on the Johnny Bench Award Watch List. This season, he was named to the Big Ten Players to Watch List.

SERIES WIN AT PENN STATE
After falling in the opener at Penn State, the Buckeyes rebounded with a Sunday doubleheader sweep over the Nittany Lions at Medlar Field April 9. In game one, Bo Coolen knocked the game-tying home run in the top of the ninth before Brady Cherry ripped a two-run triple for the go-ahead score in a 5-2 comeback win. The Buckeyes rolled in game two, 11-2. Dominic Canzone batted .462 with a home run, two runs scored and four RBI in the series, while Brady Cherry hit .333 with four runs scored, double, triple and five RBI. On the mound, the OSU staff combined for a 2.77 ERA striking out 29 hitters in 26.0 innings of work.

UP NEXT
Ohio State has five days off to prep for finals and get ready for a big home conference series against Nebraska April 28-30 in Columbus. The games will be streamed on Buckeye Vision ($) and fans can listen on AM 1460 ESPN.
