Close to 400 supporters came to meet the 2018 Buckeyes. Diamond clubbers, friends of the program, family members, coaches, support staff and alumni were all on hand to get the first look at the team. After a few words from each of the 35 members on the official roster and some comments from captains Kyle Michalik and Adam Niemeyer, the night turned to its featured speaker Nick Swisher. The Buckeye great took center stage in a Q&A format with Buckeye Diamond Club President Frank Fraas.
"Like the two captains that came up here and talked about, it's all about the guys," Swisher said. "When you move from here, whatever you do in life, and I expect you to be successful in whatever you do because you are a Buckeye and that's what we do, I think the one thing you'll look back on and even guys that are still playing in the game today, it's the locker room stuff. It's the ping pong battles. The bus rides. You'll never forget that brotherhood created here at Ohio State."
Following Swisher, eighth-year head coach Greg Beals took the stage and first thanked Swisher, the Diamond Club, his coaching and support staff and all the families and supporters in attendance. Beals made one thing clear, the 2018 Buckeyes will be a different team than a year ago.
"We've got 13 days to finish this preparation up," Beals said. "I guarantee you one thing there is going to be a whole different ball club that shows up in this uniform in 13 days. We've got some proven to do, and these guys are ready to do it."
The Scarlet and Gray open the 135th season Feb. 16-18 at the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Fla. The Buckeyes will play four games during the opening weekend against UW-Milwaukee and Canisius.
