Buckeyes Open 2013 With First Team Practice

COLUMBUS, Ohio – With three weeks left before the 2013 season opener against Mercer in Sarasota, Fla., the Ohio State baseball team was getting to work inside with its first team practice Friday afternoon.

"This team already has very high expectations for this season,” Ohio State head coach Greg Beals said. “We are very aware of the process that is required to achieve our goals. The team is excited to get going and we’re all excited to get that process started today.”

The 2013 Buckeyes return 19 letterwinners from a season ago, including eight starting position players and 11 pitchers. First team All-Big Ten pitcher Jaron Long is back along with the team’s top two hitters, Brad Hallberg (.311 avg., 15 2B, 2 HR) and Josh Dezse (.306 avg., 9 2B, 5 HR).

A couple more notes on the 2013 Buckeyes:
Ryan Cypret, David Fathalikhani and Brett McKinney have been named captains of the 2013 Ohio State baseball team.
- Ohio State returns position players that accounted for 87 percent of the Buckeye starts and pitchers that tossed over 80 percent of the innings last season will be back on the mound for Ohio State in 2013.
- The Buckeyes will play 27 home games at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium in 2013. Ohio State takes on seven NCAA Tournament teams from last season, including nine home games against those opponents.

The team will have 16 more team practices before flying to Florida Feb. 14 where it will take on Mercer, Notre Dame and St. John’s the first weekend of the season at Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota.
