COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State baseball team defeated Toledo, 10-1, as head coach Greg Beals earned his 300th career win on Columbus City Schools Day Tuesday afternoon at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium. With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 31-22 on the season while the Rockets fall to 27-25.
"My high school coach, Tom Randall, always told me you win with people," Beals said. "It's a Woody Hayes quote around here but I live by it. The win is a great accomplishment but a lot of people have helped me get here and I'm very appreciative of what they have done for me."
Toledo took the lead in the top of the second when Mark Lapikas lined a leadoff home run to right off Brett McKinney for the 1-0 advantage.
Ohio State tied it in the bottom of the frame when Brad Hutton doubled off Toledo starter Jared Locke to lead off the inning, advanced to second on a fly out by David Corna and scored when Aaron Gretz walked and got hung up between first and second on a double steal attempt.
The Buckeyes then took the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Kirby Pellant singled with one out, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a two-out RBI single to center by Greg Solomon for the 2-1 lead.
Ohio State added another against Locke in the bottom of the fifth when Ryan Cypret singled up the middle to lead off the inning, advanced to second on a groundout, moved to third on a balk and scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Patrick Porter.
Toledo then loaded the bases with nobody out on a double, a walk and a bunt single against Ohio State reliever Trace Dempsey in the top of the sixth but David Fathalikhani came on and induced a fly out to shallow right and a 4-6-3 double play to end the threat and preserve the 3-1 Buckeye lead.
The Buckeyes then used three walks, a two-run double by Cypret and an RBI single by Porter against Toledo reliever Alec Schmenk to plate four in the bottom of the sixth for the 7-1 Ohio State lead.
Ohio State tacked on one more in the bottom of the seventh to push the lead to 8-1 against Toledo reliever Andrew Marra when Pellant led off the inning with a double to right and scored on a single through the right side by Gretz.
The Buckeyes then capped the scoring at 10-1 in the bottom of the eighth when Cypret reached on an infield single to lead off the inning and came around to score on a bases-loaded fielder's choice by Ryan Leffel and Porter was hit by a pitch and scored on an infield single by Corna.
The Buckeyes travel to Bloomington, Ind., for a three-game set at Indiana beginning Thursday.
