COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball team dropped a 9-2 decision to Georgia Tech Tuesday evening at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium. With the loss, the Buckeyes fall to 32-15 while the Yellow Jackets improve to 30-18.
Georgia Tech took the early lead in the top of the first against Ohio State starter Jake Post. Brandon Thomas and Daniel Palka were each hit by a pitch with one down before Zane Evans drove in Thomas with a double off the wall in center. Sam Dove followed with a sacrifice fly to left to plate Palka for the 2-0 Yellow Jacket lead after a half inning of play.
The Yellow Jackets threatened again in the top of the third when Thomas tripled down the right-field line and Palka was hit by a pitch and stole second to put runners on second and third with one out. However, Post bounced back to strike out Evans and get Dove to ground out to second to end the threat and keep it a 2-0 game.
Ohio State then put pressure on Georgia Tech starter Jonathan King in the bottom of the third. Greg Solomon doubled to left with one down and moved to third on a wild pitch but King got Brad Hallberg to hit a comebacker to the mound and Joe Ciamacco followed with a lineout to left to end the inning.
Georgia Tech added to its lead with four off Post in the top of the fourth. With two down, Mott Hyde doubled to left and Mitch Earnest followed with a single through the left side to score Hyde for the 3-0 advantage. After Kyle Wren singled and Thomas reached on an error, Palka cleared the bases with a triple to left-center to a 6-0 Yellow Jacket lead.
After Tyler Giannonatti tossed a scoreless fifth, the Yellow Jackets tacked on another in the top of the sixth when Earnest singled to lead off the inning, stole second and scored on a one-out single to right by Thomas to push the lead to 7-0.
Giannonatti followed with a scoreless top of the seventh before the Buckeyes got on the board in the bottom of the frame. Jacob Bosiokovic blasted a solo home run off Georgia Tech reliever Jonathan Roberts to make it a 7-1 game. The blast was his fourth of the season.
The Yellow Jackets then added two more in the ninth on a solo home run by Dove and an RBI double by Earnest to push the lead to 9-1. Ohio State put another run on the board when Pat Porter walked with one down in the bottom of the frame and scored on an RBI groundout by Mike Carroll to cap the scoring at 9-2.
Bosiokovic went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Post suffered the loss for Ohio State to fall to 2-1 on the season while King tossed 6.0 scoreless to move to 5-4 on the season for Georgia Tech.
