COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State fell to Iowa, 17-2, Sunday afternoon at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium. With the loss, the Buckeyes fall to 26-21, 7-10 in Big Ten play, while the Hawkeyes move to 26-16, 8-9 in conference play.
“We just imploded today,” Ohio State head coach Greg Beals said. “We had bad tempo. The flow and pace of the game were not good. We didn’t pitch the ball well which sometimes facilitates bad defense and we weren’t really solid offensively either. However, we came into yesterday trying to win the series and that’s what we’ll try to do tomorrow night.”
Iowa took the early lead in the top of the first off Ohio State starter Ryan Riga. Eric Toole reached on a bunt single to lead off the game before stealing second and moving to third with one down after a groundout by Jake Mangler. Riga then retired Tyler Peyton on a comebacker to the mound for the second out of the inning but Jake Yacinich followed with an RBI single back up the middle and, after balk moved him to second, scored on a double off the right-field wall by Dan Potempa to give Iowa the 2-0 lead.
Ohio State answered with a run off Iowa starter Sasha Kuebel in the bottom of the inning. Nick Sergakis reached on a leadoff single through the left side before an error on a failed pickoff throw moved him to third with nobody out. Kuebel struck out Connor Sabanosh for the first out of the inning but Troy Kuhn followed with an RBI groundout to third to score Sergakis to cut the lead to 2-1.
Iowa responded with a run off Riga in the top of the second. With one down, Toole singled, moved to second on a walk by Mangler, stole third and scored on an RBI groundout by Peyton to push the lead to 3-1.
The Hawkeyes add three runs in the top of the fourth. Kris Goodman reached on a walk before Toole got aboard on an error before Peyton hit a two-out, three run home run to right to push the Hawkeye lead to 6-1.
Iowa then tacked on five runs on five singles and a pair of walks in the top of the fifth to chase Riga from the game and blow the game open at 11-1 before making it 13-1 in the sixth on a Goodman RBI double and an RBI groundout by Nick Day off Buckeye reliever Michael Horejsei.
The Hawkeyes plated four more on two hits and three Buckeye errors in the top of the seventh to extend the lead to 17-1.
Ohio State got a run back off Kuebel in the bottom of the eighth when Jacob Bosiokovic reached on a one-out single, moved to second on an Aaron Gretz walk and scored on a two-out RBI single to center by Ryan Leffel to make it a 17-2 game but Iowa came away with the series-tying victory.
Dezse finished the day 2-for-3 with a walk. Kuebel picked up the win to move to 6-3 on the year, allowing one earned run on nine hits in the complete game while Riga took the loss, falling to 4-2.
The Buckeyes and Hawkeyes meet in the rubber game of the three-game series at 7:05 p.m. Monday.
- Dezse picked up his 10th multi-hit game of the year.
