COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball team picked up a 7-3 win over Murray State to win the series Sunday afternoon at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium. With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 23-18 on the year while the Thoroughbreds fall to 17-20.
Ohio State took the lead off Murray State starter Sheldon Baxter in the bottom of the first. Nick Sergakis reached on a leadoff walk before Ronnie Dawson hit what appeared to be a two-run home run to center. However, Dawson overran Sergakis while rounding first, resulting in an RBI single by Dawson with Sergakis scoring from first for the 1-0 Buckeye lead.
The Buckeyes added another in the bottom of the second. With two down, Jacob Bosiokovic walked before a single by Connor Sabanosh put runners on first and second before Sergakis lined a single to right to plate Bosiokovic to make it a 2-0 game.
Buckeye starter Jake Post held the Thoroughbreds scoreless over the first three innings but was lifted because of an injury after the third.
Zach Farmer pitched a scoreless fourth but Murray State knotted the score in the fifth. Farmer hit Dalton West to lead off the inning before Taylor Mathews singled and, after Ty Stetson moved both runners up with a sacrifice bunt, Anthony Bayus drove in a pair with a triple to right-center. Kollin Dowdy followed with a single up the middle to plate Bayus to make it a 3-3 game.
The Buckeyes answered back in the bottom of the inning. A pair of two-out walks chased Baxter in favor of Tyler Saltsman, who was greeted with an RBI single through the right side by Josh Dezse to score Zach Ratcliff. Saltsman then uncorked a wild pitch to score Montgomery for the 5-3 Ohio State lead.
Farmer settled down after the rocky fifth to toss three more scoreless innings before the Buckeyes added to their lead off John Lollar in the bottom of the eighth. With two down, Dawson doubled off the wall in right-center and Kuhn followed with an RBI single that Bayus lost in the sun at second base. After Porter walked, Ratcliff laced a single to center to score Kuhn to push the Ohio State lead to 7-3.
Trace Dempsey came on to toss a scoreless ninth as Ohio State picked up the win.
Farmer earned the win to improve to 6-4 on the year while Baxter suffered the loss, falling to 1-4. Sergakis and Kuhn each went 3-for-4 while Dawson finished the day 2-for-5.
The Buckeyes travel to West Lafayette for a three-game series at Purdue next weekend.
