Ohio State Falls to Ball State, 8-6

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball team suffered an 8-6 defeat to Ball State Wednesday evening at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium. With the loss, the Buckeyes drop to 21-17 on the season while the Cardinals improve to 25-12.
Ohio State jumped out to the early lead against Ball State starter Clay Manering when Ronnie Dawson singled with one down and Troy Kuhn followed with a two-run shot to left, his team-high fifth of the season, for the 2-0 Buckeye lead.
Buckeye starter Curtiss Irving tossed 2.0 scoreless innings before Yianni Pavlopoulos came on to pitch a scoreless third but the Cardinals got on the board against Michael Horejsei in the top of the fourth. Sean Godfrey singled to lead off the inning, moved to second on a groundout by Caleb Stayton and scored on a single through the left side by Sean Kennedy to cut the Ohio State lead to 2-1. Ball State designated hitter T.J. Weir followed with a two-run home run to left to give the Cardinals the 3-2 lead before Michael Koltak came on in relief. Back-to-back singles by Sam Tidabeck and Brandon Estep scored Maloney before a walk to Alex Call loaded the bases and Ryan Spaulding followed with a sacrifice fly to left to plate Tidabeck to make it a 5-2 game.
Ohio State threatened in the bottom of the frame. Troy Montgomery reached on a bunt single to lead off the inning before Godfrey climbed the wall in left-center to rob Josh Dezse of a two-run home run before the Cardinals went to Tyler Jordan out of the bullpen. Jordan walked Jacob Bosiokovic before Connor Sabanosh singled to right to load the bases with one down. However, Jordan responded to strike out Nick Sergakis before getting Dawson to fly out to left to preserve the 5-2 lead.
After Trace Dempsey tossed a scoreless fifth, the Cardinals tacked on three more against Tyler Giannonatti in the sixth on a single, two walks, two wild pitches, a passed ball and a squeeze bunt to push the lead to 8-2.
The Buckeyes responded against Jordan in the bottom of the sixth. Dezse reached on a leadoff walk before Bosiokovic reached on an infield single and Sabanosh singled through the left side to cut the lead to 8-3. Sergakis then reached on a bunt single before Dawson lined a two-run single to right-center to plate Bosiokovic and Sabanosh to make it an 8-5 game. Kuhn followed with a sacrifice fly to right to score Sergakis to cut the lead to 8-6 after six innings.
Nestor Bautista, who came on to get the final two outs of the sixth, tossed 1.2 scoreless frames before Weir pitched the final 2.0 innings for his first save of the season.
Bautista earned the win to improve to 3-0 on the year while Horejsei took the loss to drop to 0-1. Dawson went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored for the Buckeyes while Kuhn finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored.
Ohio State takes on Murray State in a three-game series starting Friday at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium.
