Late Miscues Costly as Ohio State Drops 3-2 Opener at Nebraska
April 4, 2014
LINCOLN, Neb. – The Ohio State baseball team suffered a 3-2 defeat to Nebraska Friday night at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park. With the loss, the Buckeyes fall to 18-11, 2-5 in the Big Ten, while the Huskers improve to 17-13, 2-2 in conference play.
“We just have to mentally be ready to play tomorrow,” Ohio State head coach Greg Beals said. “We lost the opener in the Michigan State series and we lost the opener here last year and won that series so it’s just a matter of our guys mentally putting this away and getting ready for tomorrow.”
Both Ohio State starter Greg Greve and Nebraska starter Christian DeLeon cruised through the first four innings until the Buckeyes got on the board in the top of the fifth. With one down, singles by Jacob Bosiokovic and Nick Sergakis put runners on first and second before DeLeon struck out Tim Wetzel swinging for the second out of the inning. However, Troy Kuhn followed with a single through the left side to score Bosiokovic as Ohio State took the 1-0 lead.
The Huskers threatened in the bottom of the sixth when Austin Darby reached on a leadoff single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Boldt. Greve then induced a come-backer to the mound by Michael Pritchard and threw to third where Bosiokovic dropped the tag on Darby for the second out of the inning. Buckeye catcher Connor Sabanosh then threw out Pritchard trying to steal second as Ohio State preserved the 1-0 advantage.
Ohio State added another off DeLeon in the top of the seventh. Bosiokovic reached on a one-out walk and, after Sergakis moved him up on a groundout to third, scored on a two-out RBI single to center by Wetzel to extend the Buckeye lead to 2-0.
After Travis Lakins tossed a scoreless bottom of the seventh in relief of Greve, the Huskers touched the freshman right-hander up for three to take the lead in the bottom of the eighth. Lakins hit Steven Reveles to lead off the inning before a Kuhn error on a ground ball by Boldt put runners on first and second with nobody out. After a sacrifice bunt by Boldt moved both runners up, Pritchard and Pat Kelly both followed with RBI singles to right to tie the game at 2-2. Lakins then got Blake Headley to ground out but Ben Miller followed with an infield single to score Pritchard as the Huskers took the 3-2 lead after eight.
DeLeon came back out for the ninth and allowed a one-out single to Bosiokovic but bounced back to strike out Sergakis before Nebraska catcher Tanner Lubach threw out Bosiokovic trying to advance to second as the ball got away on strike three to end the game.
Ronnie Dawson and Bosiokovic each had two hits for the Buckeyes. DeLeon picked up the win to improve to 3-2 on the season while Lakins suffered the loss, falling to 1-1.
Ohio State takes on Nebraska in the middle game at 3:05 p.m. ET Saturday.
- Ryan Leffel and Dawson each extended their hitting streak to five games.
- Dawson notched his 11th multi-hit game while Bosiokovic picked up his ninth.
