COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball team topped Toledo, 7-2, Wednesday evening at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium. With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 18-10 on the season while the Rockets drop to 10-15.
“We took care of business yesterday and today,” Ohio State head coach Greg Beals said. “We’ll have a good challenge on the road at Nebraska this weekend. They’re playing well but probably haven’t played up to their potential so far so they’ll be looking to bust out a little bit. We have to go defend ourselves after last weekend because we can’t afford to have two bad weekends in a row in conference.”
Ohio State took the early lead off Toledo starter Ross Achter in the bottom of the first. A Troy Kuhn single, a walk to Ryan Leffel and an error on a ground ball by Ronnie Dawson loaded the bases with nobody out before Jacob Bosiokovic drew a walk to score Kuhn for the first run of the game. Zach Ratcliff then grounded into a double play but Leffel scored on the play to make it a 2-0 game. Pat Porter followed with a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch before Connor Sabanosh lined a two-run single to right to score Dawson and Porter to push the lead to 4-0 after an inning of play.
The Buckeyes added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth off Toledo reliever Caleb Schillace. A walk to Tim Wetzel and a single by Kuhn put runners on first and second before a sacrifice bunt by Leffel moved both runners up a base. Dawson then singled through the left side to score Wetzel before Bosiokovic singled up the middle to plate Kuhn to push the lead to 6-0.
After Ohio State starter Zach Farmer tossed 4.0 scoreless frames to begin the ballgame, the Rockets got on the board against Buckeye reliever Jake Post in the top of the fifth. With one down, Deion Tansel walked and Tyler Grogg singled before a balk moved both runners up a base. Post then struck out Dan Zuachowski but Ryan Callahan lined a two-out, two-run single to left to cut the Buckeye lead to 6-2.
Post tossed a scoreless sixth before Yianni Pavlopoulos came on to toss 2.0 scoreless frames in his first collegiate appearance.
The Buckeyes tacked on another run off Toledo right-hander Adam Tyson in the bottom of the eighth. With two down, Leffel and Dawson both singled before Bosiokovic singled up the middle to drive home Leffel to extend the Ohio State lead to 7-2.
Travis Lakins struck out a pair in a scoreless ninth as Ohio State improved to 18-10 on the season.
Farmer earned the win to improve to 4-3 on the year while Kuhn, Dawson, Bosiokovic, Porter and Sabanosh each tallied two-hit games.
Ohio State takes on Nebraska in a three-game series starting Friday in Lincoln.
- Kuhn tallied his team-high 11th multi-hit game of the season while Dawson notched his 10th, Bosiokovic earned his eighth, Porter recorded his sixth and Sabanosh picked up his fourth.
