PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Josh Dezse’s sacrifice fly to score Joe Ciamacco in the 10th inning gave the Ohio State baseball team a 4-3 victory Sunday afternoon at North Charlotte Regional Park. With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 6-4 on the season while Villanova falls to 5-4.

Both Ohio State starter Greg Greve and Villanova’s Stephen Ostapeck cruised through the first four frames perfect but the Wildcats were able to get to the Buckeyes’ sophomore right-hander in the top of the fifth. Connor Jones broke up Greve’s perfect game with a leadoff double and scored on a throwing error on Tyler Sciacca’s sacrifice bunt attempt. After Sciacca moved to second when the throw sailed down the right field line, Steve Schrenk singled up the middle to make it 2-0 Villanova.

However, the Buckeyes would respond with two in the bottom of the sixth to tie it. Greg Solomon doubled to right-center to lead off the inning and scored on a single to left by Ciamacco. Ciamacco then scored the tying run on a two-out single to left by Ryan Cypret.

Villanova then took a 3-2 lead with a run in the top of the seventh. After a pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases, Andrew Armstrong came on to relieve Greve. The senior left-hander tallied a huge strikeout against the only batter he faced, pinch-hitter Adam Nelson. David Fathalikhani then relieved Armstrong and recorded the second out of the inning on a fielder’s choice bunt where he was able to get the force out at home but with two down, the right-hander plunked Marlon Calbi to score Schrenk and give Villanova the lead.

Ohio State answered right back with a run of its own to tie it in the bottom of the frame. Dezse singled to lead off the inning and Mike Carroll followed with a walk to chase Ostapeck from the game in favor of Matt Lengel. After David Corna sacrificed Carroll and Dezse over to second and third, respectively, Kirby Pellant drove Dezse home with an RBI groundout to second.

The Buckeyes threatened again in the eighth with runners on second and third and one out but Villanova reliever Julian Diaz struck out Cypret and induced a groundout by Dezse to keep the game knotted up.

Ohio State almost won it in the ninth when a hit batter and an intentional walk put runners on first and second with one down but Villanova left fielder Matt Fleishman made a diving catch on a sinking liner by Solomon and Ryan Leffel grounded out as the game headed to extra innings.

Ciamacco reached on an infield single to lead off the 10th, stole second, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Wetzel and an intentional walk to Cypret put runners on the corners and one down to set up the game-winning sacrifice fly.

Ciamacco finished with his fifth-consecutive multi-hit game and scored two runs while Dezse had two hits, the game-winning RBI and a run scored. John Kuchno picked up his first win of the season with three innings of scoreless, one-hit ball while striking out three.

Up next, the Buckeyes hit the road for the Chanticleer Classic next weekend in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
