Two Ohio State Cheerleaders to Represent Team USA at 2011 World Championships
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State cheerleaders Cassie Benfield and Brittany Maynard have been chosen to represent Team USA at the 2011 International Cheer Union World Championships April 29, 2011 in Orlando, Fla.
Benfield, a senior from Elida, Ohio, and Maynard, a sophomore from Grove City, were selected to the team by way of a closed-door tryout in Orlando - less than 24 hours removed from competing at the UCA National Cheerleading Championships where the Buckeyes once again placed in the Top 10. Tryouts consisted of standing and running tumbling and partner stunt skills in front of Team USA judges and coaches.
In all, 13 women and 20 men were selected. A total of 24 members compete with six alternates. Team USA Coed will be coached by David McDowell from the University of Alabama and LeRoy McCullough from Oklahoma State University. The team will train for two weeks in Dallas before competing at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando in April.
Last season more than 60 countries competed at the world championships and more are expected in 2011. Benfield and Maynard are the only student-athletes from a Big Ten school who were selected to Team USA.
