Over the weekend, the Buckeyes headed to the US Air Force Academy for a pair of matches against Air Force, Nebraska and Kentucky.
On Saturday, the Buckeyes posted a team score of 4686, placing them at second behind Kentucky (4696) and ahead of both Air Force (4663) and Nebraska (4663). Ohio State’s score of 4686 is their second highest of the season and helped to increase the team’s NCAA qualification average to 4687. Currently, the Bucks sit at No. 6 in the NCAA rankings.
In smallbore, the team was led by sophomore Jacob Buchanan who fired a score of 581. Freshman Elizabeth Dutton (578), senior Drew Cheezum (577), sophomore Rhiann Travis (574) and senior Mark Matheny (567) rounded out the counting team for the Buckeyes. Firing as individuals, Alli Kissell and Josh Black posted scores of 573 and 572 respectively.
In air rifle, Ohio State fired a program record score of 2376. Leading the way were Rhiann Travis and Mark Matheny, who both posted season best scores of 595. Drew Cheezum also posted a season best 594, while Jacob Buchanan (592) and Elizabeth Dutton (579) rounded out the counting team. Firing as individuals, Josh Black and Alli Kissell fired scores of 585 and 573 respectively.
Coach Ryan Tanoue was impressed with the team’s performance against some of the top teams in the nation. He explains, “We had a great weekend of competition in Colorado against three other top 10 teams, all of whom competed at last season’s NCAA Championships. Over the two days, we saw several season bests, a personal best, and a program record performance in air rifle, and it was extremely exciting and gratifying to see our team perform at that level over two days.”
On Sunday, Ohio State fired another solid team score of 4682, just barely placing second behind Kentucky (4687) and ahead of both Air Force (4672) and Nebraska (4672).
The team fired a score of 2309 in smallbore, again led by Jacob Buchanan, who fired a score of 581. Elizabeth Dutton (578), Drew Cheezum (575), Mark Matheny (575) and Rhiann Travis (466) rounded out team scoring. Josh Black led the way for the individuals firing a 580, while Alli Kissell posted a 575.
In air rifle, the Buckeyes had another great performance posting a team score of 2373. The team was led by a personal best performance from Mark Matheny, who fired a score of 596. He was followed closely by Jacob Buchanan and Drew Cheezum, who both fired scores of 594. Elizabeth Dutton (589) and Rhiann Travis (588) rounded out team scoring. Individuals Josh Black and Alli Kissell posted scores of 592 and 571 respectively.
Coach Tanoue weighs in on his thoughts about NCAA competition during the fall portion of the season, “This match was our final NCAA competition of the fall, and looking back, we have had a fantastic fall season. We will go into the holiday break with the highest three-score average we have ever had at this point in the season. We are looking forward to participating in the USA Shooting Winter Air Championships and finishing the semester strong academically over the next few weeks.”
