It is official, the Buckeyes will be heading South over their spring break for the 2018 NC Rifle Championship. The Buckeyes gathered together to watch the NCAA Selection Show this evening, eagerly awaiting for the news to become official.
The selections for the 2018 NC Rifle Championship were announced this Wednesday evening at 5 p.m. ET on NCAA.com.
The teams that will be heading to the NCAA Championships are as follows:
1. West Virginia
2. Texas Christian University
3. Murray State
4. University of Kentucky
5. Alaska Fairbanks
6. U.S. Air Force Academy
7. The Ohio State University
8. University of Nebraska
The Championships will be hosted by The Citadel in Charleston, SC on March 9-10 in the McAlister Field House.
The CRCA rankings gave the Buckeyes an inkling that they would be one of the eight teams selected, and that inkling was confirmed this evening. The Buckeyes were ranked seventh in the CRCA rankings, which is the rank they recieved in the Selection Show this evening as well.
WVU has been dominant in years passed, and last year the Mountaineers claimed their fifth straight title. The Buckeyes are hopeful to give the reigning champions a big challenge this year.
Each team is permitted five counters similar to the season, and the Buckeyes will be bringing senior Drew Cheezum, senior Joshua Black, sophomore Rhiann Travis, sophomore Jacob Buchanan and freshman Elizabeth Dutton as their counters.
The Championships will include three-position team smallbore competition (60 shots) on Friday, March 9, followed by air rifle competition (60 shots) on Saturday, March 10. The overall team champion will be determined by combining the smallbore and air rifle team total scores into one aggregate score for each institution.
The team will practice in Charleston, SC on Thursday, March 8 to become familiar with the facilities.
Lucky for the Bucks, back in September they shot at The Citadel for their first match of the season. The travels that kicked off the season gave them a good feel for what to expect next month.
