Buchanan hits career and season bests in Fairbanks

The Ohio State University Rifle Team headed across the country to compete in Fairbanks, Alaska this past Friday and Saturday.

On Friday, the Bucks posted a team score of 4675 besting Air Force (4649) and falling to host Alaska, Fairbanks (4694). The match was held at the Tanana Valley Sportsman’s Association Range.

In smallbore, Ohio State fired a team score of 2320 led by seniors Drew Cheezum (583) and Mark Matheny (582).  Junior Michael Steinel (579) and sophomores Rhiann Travis (576) and Alli Kissell (570) rounded out team scoring for the Buckeyes. Firing as individuals, sophomore Jacob Buchanan fired a career best 585 while senior Josh Black rounded out individual scoring with a 570.

In air rifle, the Buckeyes posted a team score of 2355, led by Jacob Buchanan’s season best 593. Drew Cheezum (588), Mark Matheny (587), Rhiann Travis (587), and Michael Steinel (579) rounded out team scoring. Firing as individuals, Alli Kissell posted a season best of 585 while Joshua Black rounded out individual scoring with a 581.


 

 

On Saturday, Ohio State posted a team score of 4669 against host Alaska, Fairbanks (4678) at the UAF Rifle Range.

In smallbore, the Buckeyes were led by Drew Cheezum and Jacob Buchanan who both fired scores of 579. They were followed by Rhiann Travis (574), Michael Steinel (571) and Mark Matheny (566) who rounded out team scoring. Josh Black (580) and Alli Kissell (579) both posted solid individual scores.

In air rifle, Ohio State fired their highest air rifle team score of the season, posting a 2366. The team was led by season best scores from Jacob Buchanan (594), Michael Steinel (593), and Drew Cheezum (590). Mark Matheny (589) and Rhiann Travis (587) rounded out team scoring for the Buckeyes. Firing as individuals, Josh Black fired a personal best 594 while Alli Kissell fired a 574.

Coach Ryan Tanoue weighs in on the team’s experience in Fairbanks, “Competing in Alaska is always one of the highlights of our season and this year was no different. We saw some really great performances across the board, but struggled with some inconsistency over the two days. Overall we gained a lot of experience and we’re looking forward to hosting the 5th annual Dr. John C. Fellingham Buckeye Open this coming weekend.”

Ohio State returns to action this coming weekend vs. Nevada as part of the Dr. John C. Fellingham Buckeye Open which will be held on both Saturday and Sunday at the Hugh W. Wylie Range inside of Converse Hall. This will be the first home event of the season, and the Rifle Bucks hope to have you join them!
