COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (1-0) rifle team opened the season with a 4,599 to 4,562 victory over Morehead State at the Lt. Hugh W. Wylie Range in Converse Hall. In the team competition, OSU edged Morehead State, 2,322 to 2,285 in air rifle and both team recorded a 2,277 in smallbore rifle.
Individually, Ohio State’s Amanda Furrer finished first in all three events shooting a 583 in smallbore rifle and a 587 in air rifle. She recorded a 1,170 in the two-gun aggregate to sweep the titles. Morehead State’s Ethan Cole finished second in smallbore rifle (576) and fifth in air rifle (578) to finish fifth in the aggregate with a 1,154. Other top finishers for the Buckeyes included Gina Cheliras taking fourth in smallbore rifle at 572 and Nicholas Novello taking fifth at 569. In air rifle, the Buckeyes held the top four finishes with Amanda Luoma second at 585, Lauren Alman third at 581 and Cheliras fourth at 580. Cheliras was third in the two-gun aggregate with a 1,152 and Luoma was fourth at 1,151.
Next Saturday, Ohio State hosts Columbus State (Ga.) and Akron at 8 a.m.
