Ohio State Sweeps NRA Midwestern Air Pistol Sectionals

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State pistol team hosted the NRA Midwestern Air Pistol Sectionals Feb. 28 – March 1 at the Lt. Hugh W. Wylie Range. The Buckeyes swept the competition, claiming the top eight spots.
Senior A.J. Tourigny was the match champion, earning a score of 568 to claim first place. Behind Tourigny, freshman Seth Bearjar claimed second place with a score of 551 while classmate Elizabeth Szalajko also shot a 551 to round out the top three competitors.
Senior Joe Totts shot a 547 to place fourth, freshman Elizabeth Buerling and junior Greyson McCaig each scored a 546 to tie for fifth place, senior Kim Hullings notched a 544 to place sixth and freshman Quentin Cauffman tallied a 543 to round out the top Buckeye scorers.
Upon conclusion of the event, Ohio State earned an official invitation to the NRA Pistol National Championships held March 9-14 at Fort Benning in Columbus, Ga.
All five Buckeye teams qualified to shoot at the championships. The open air pistol team, free pistol team and standard pistol team will be comprised of four members each while the women’s air pistol and women’s sport pistol teams will be comprised of three members each.
In addition, of the 15 Buckeyes who will shoot at the NRA National Championships on teams, 11 will also shoot as individuals.
The open events are scored out of 600 while the women’s events are scored out of 400 in Women’s Air and 600 in Women’s Sport.
Ohio State qualified as the first place team in open air pistol (2,240), free pistol (2,051) and standard pistol (2,176) and as the second place team in women’s air pistol (1,087) and women’s sport pistol (1,612) behind the USNA Blue team and MIT, respectively.
