Ohio State Sets Program Record at Midwest Collegiate Sectionals

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State University pistol team earned a school record score of 6,467 to remain perfect on the season and outpoint the University of Akron (5,314) and Cedarville University (5,004) at the Midwest Collegiate Sectionals Jan. 31 - Feb. 1 at the Lt. Hugh W. Wylie Range.
The scores fired at the ten collegiate sectionals around the country are sent to the NRA National Collegiate Office to determine the Top 10 open teams and Top 5 women's teams to qualify to the national championships held March 8-13 in Fort Benning, Ga.
The Buckeyes swept the competition in all three open events, with overall scores of 2,051 in free pistol, 2,176 in standard pistol and 2,240 in open pistol.
Senior A.J. Tourigny led the way for Ohio State in free pistol, claiming first place in the event with a score of 535. Tourigny was followed by classmate Joe Totts who placed second with a score of 518 and freshman Quentin Cauffman who finished in third place with a 502.
Totts continued the Buckeye momentum with a win in standard pistol after scoring a 559. Behind Totts, senior Kim Hullings scored a 555 to notch a second-place finish.
Totts also claimed first place in open air pistol. The Mogadore, Ohio, native scored a 566 to tally his second individual win of the day. Tourigny followed with a 564 to notch a second-place finish and Cauffman rounded out the top three scorers with a 557.
The Scarlet and Gray swept women's competition as well, scoring 1,612 in women's sport pistol and 1,087 in women's air pistol.
Hullings claimed individual titles in both events, shooting 560 in sport pistol and 366 in air pistol. Behind Hullings, senior Mariah Skiles and freshman Elizabeth Szalajko shot 528 and 524, respectively, to round out the top three scorers in the sport pistol event.
Szalajko and classmate Elizabeth Buerling earned scores of 363 and 358 to place second and third in air pistol, respectively.
The Buckeyes return to action at the Final Countdown, Feb. 14-15 at the Lt. Hugh W. Wylie Range. Competition is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. Saturday.
