Student-Athlete Spotlight - Stas Sudilovsky, Fencing

Sophomore Stas Sudilovsky began the 2015-2016 season coming off a seventh place finish at the NCAA Championship, making Third Team All-American at the event. In the foil weapon category, Sudilovsky finished in sixth place at this year’s Garret Penn State Open and helped the men’s squad to a 3-2 record at University of Pennsylvania’s Elite Invitational. The Haifa, Israel native is gearing up for competition in 2016.

Student Life

Do you prefer Oval Beach in the Fall or Spring (or maybe the Winter)? Definitely spring, when it's warm and you can relax on the oval between classes.

Where is the best place to sit for lectures? 5th row in the middle. It has the best view and the least amount of distractions.

Most underrated place to study on campus? I haven't found it yet. I always study at home. If you find one, let me know!

Why did you choose to major in ...? Earth science – Geophysics. I prefer physical sciences where I can feel and touch what I'm working on. In addition this requires work outdoors and this field will allow me to travel a lot around the world.

Describe your first day as a student at The Ohio State University? The first day was a complete shock. It was -20 Celsius, something that I'm not used to. I thought, “How am I going to survive in this terrible weather?”

Team you're most looking forward to competing against: Columbia University because they won last year's NCAA Championship.

Pre-game/match superstition/Pre-game/match ritual: I tell myself motivational speech the night before and the morning of the competition.

What is your top skill? What skill do you need to improve? My top skill is my defensive side and parries. I need to work more on advancing in smaller steps.

Travel

Most interesting place I've visited: Baku, Azerbaijan. During competition there I met my grandfather for the first time.

Place I would like to visit: Alaska and New Zealand. The nature and the views are so beautiful.

Food

Favorite home cooked meal: Steak with potatoes and hummus

Favorite snack food: Any combination of fruit salad.

Guilty pleasure snack and/or food: Cakes – Unfortunately I can't resist them

Miscellaneous

Person I most admire: My mother. She is always there to support me and lift me up from hard times.

The greatest risk I've ever taken was: Joining the piloting school in the Israeli Air Force.

In 10 years, I would like to be: With a family and working in the exploration and mining field wherever life takes me to.

If I had a million dollars I would: Give some to my family, donate some, and invest the rest.

Coolest thing you did this past summer: I went camping with my best friend near the Jordan River.

Most prized possession: My bicycle

I would like to trade places for a day with: Mark Zuckerberg, to see what it’s like to be the most influential innovator in the last years and own a social media platform

If you could have dinner with any 3 people (alive or dead), who would they be and what/where would you eat: Larry Page, Bill Gates and Steve Jobs, to see how those innovators and entrepreneurs built technological empires starting from zero.

Any superstitions, non-game/match related: Whenever I check my assigned strip, I don’t check for who my opponents are.

Dream event (non-sport or sport-related) you would like to attend: A future peace treaty signing between any countries.

If your parents/guardians bragged about you, what would they say? How focused I am on my goals, and try to do anything on the best side possible.

Do you have an interesting nickname? Originally in Russian, it is Stasik. It is to make someone smaller, usually children, and it is funny because of the contrast of how tall I am.

What is your hometown known for? The mountain, forest, and the beaches - the best combination.

Pop or Soda? Soda, even though I don't drink it.

Cats or Dogs? Definitely dogs

Early Bird or Night Owl? Night owl, but depends if I have practice the next morning.

Would you be the O, H, I or the O in a group photo? H
