Buckeyes Sweep OSU Duals, 8-0

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State fencing team opened the 2015-2016 season with an 8-0 sweep at OSU Duals on Sunday at French Field House. The team victory extends the Buckeye Fencing streak to twelve years of sweeping OSU Duals.

The women’s squad recorded a 198-18 bout-record and the men’s squad notched a 189-27 bout-record, defeating Indiana, Purdue, Michigan State, Illinois, Case Western Reserve, Michigan, Cleveland State, and Oakland. The women’s squad went undefeated against Indiana and Cleveland State, while the men’s squad earned undefeated performances against Illinois and Oakland.

Junior Alexa Antipas, senior Sterling Streb, and senior Kyjah Coryat teamed up for the women’s sabre unit, each fencer tallying 20 points or more. Antipas led the unit with 23 points, only suffering one loss. The women’s foil unit contributed a 66-6 bout-record, highlighted by undefeated performances from Eleanor Harvey, Nina Stackhouse, and Caira Moreira-Brown. Morgan Mzhen suffered only one loss, earning a 14-1 record. Freshmen Gabriella Leccese made her first appearance as a Buckeye with a 10-2 record, as well as Ashley Hahn who broke even at 3-3.

It was an all-freshmen effort from the women’s epee unit. Emma von Dadelszen, Alexandria Alpy, Ally Micek, Elizabeth Kirk, and Lauren Natkin all made their debut, notching a 67-5 bout-record. Each epeeist only suffered one loss.

The men’s sabre squad garnered a 63-9 bout-record, led by 20-point performances from freshman Anurup Krishna and junior John Lazzari. Freshman Zack Whicker made his Buckeye debut, tallying a 15-3 bout-record. The men’s foil squad saw a 67-5 bout-record, featuring undefeated performances from freshman Nicola Sirito, 24-0, and sophomore James Hu, 18-0.

Men’s epee debuted four freshmen, led by a 17-3 performance from Oliver Shindler. Sophomore Abraham Coull earned an undefeated record, 7-0.

Ohio State returns to action in Richmond, Va. to compete in the October NAC on Oct. 10.
