Ohio State Fencing Opens 2014-15 Season with OSU Duals

COLUMBUS, Ohio- The Ohio State fencing squad will open the 2014-15 season with the OSU Duals this Saturday at 8 a.m. in French Field House.  Admission to the 14-team event is free and it is round robin format.

The teams present include Ohio State, Xavier, Bowling Green, Case Western Reserve, Michigan State, Oberlin, Michigan, CSU, Indiana, Illinois, Oakland, Purdue, Iowa and McKendree.

Typically the OSU Duals is a chance for the coaches to showcase younger talent, which includes 20 freshmen this year.

A YEAR AGO
Last year, the Buckeyes swept the Duals, 13-0, extending their undefeated streak to 10-consecutive years.  The women’s foil group, consisting of Taylor McIntyre, Mai Shaito and Kyjah Coryat, registered an undefeated performance, 72-0. The sabre unit saw undefeated performances from Alexa Antipas, Ben Theeman, Nitikorn Dornjandaeng, and Celina Merza. Eugenia Falqui registered an 18-0 record to help the women’s epee unit to a 67-5 overall record.

OHIO STATE TO HOST 2015 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Ohio State University will host the 2015 NCAA Fencing Championships in Columbus, Ohio, on March 19-22. Competition will be held in French Field House, with championship bouts occurring in St. John Arena.

This will be the second-consecutive year Ohio State has hosted the event and fifth time in history (2014, 2012, 2011 and 2008).

OHIO STATE FINISHES FOURTH AT 2014 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Scarlet and Gray finished fourth at the 2014 NCAA Fencing Championships, extending their streak of Top-5 finishes to 13 years. The team tallied 149 victories, highlighted by a third place finished from freshman Alanna Goldie in women’s foil.

Six other Buckeyes earned a Top-10 finish: Kristian Boyadzhiev (5th, men’s epee), Mona Shaito (5th, women’s foil), Zain Shaito (6th, men’s foil), Alexa Antipas (6th, women’s sabre), Fares Arfa (9th, men’s sabre), and Celina Merza (9th, women’s sabre).

UP NEXT
Following the Duals, the Buckeyes will travel to Portland, Ore., to compete in the October NAC Cup on Oct. 10.
