Buckeyes Hold Firm in Fourth after Day Two of NCAA Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Strong performances by both competitors in men's epee propelled Ohio State to fourth place following the conclusion of men's competition in the 2011 NCAA Fencing Championships in St. John Arena in Columbus.

The Top 5 remains unchanged after Friday with Notre Dame leading the pack with 90 points. Penn State follows in second with 84 and St. John's sits in third with 71. The Buckeyes and Harvard are tied for fourth with 65 points.

Women's competition begins at 10 a.m. Saturday. Women's championship bouts take place Sunday at 2 p.m. inside St. John Arena. Live stats can be followed at www.prisedefer.com/NCAA and live video can be found at www.NCAA.com.

Igor Tolkachev and Marco Canevari both earned All-America accolades Friday afternoon. Canevari earned first team All-America status and a berth in the final four in men's epee after picking up 16 wins in pool play, but couldn't get past Princeton's Jonathan Yergler in the semifinals. The sophomore Italian fell to Yergler, 15-9.

Tolkachev finished a win short of the final four after dropping his last bout to Yergler, 5-4, in pool play. The junior second team All-American finished fifth with 14 victories and a +22. Tolkachev and Canevari proved to be the strongest men's epee duo, finishing top in the standings with 30 total victories.

Zain Shaito led Ohio State's men's foil squad with 13 victories, including a 5-3 win against runner-up Miles Chamley-Watson of Penn State, to take 10th place. Teammate Samuel Hardwicke-Brown finished 24th with four wins.

The Buckeyes posted similar results in men's sabre as freshman Rhys Douglas took home 10th with 13 victories and a +10 indicator. Sophomore Michael Douville accumulated five wins to place 23rd.
