COLUMBUS, Ohio – Max Stearns, a senior member of the Ohio State men’s fencing team, is the recipient of the Elite 89 award for the 2013 NCAA Division I Men’s Fencing Championship. He was presented with the award during the men’s individual awards presentation after the championship bouts on Friday afternoon in San Antonio, Texas. Stearns has recorded a cumulative 4.0 GPA in his time at Ohio State.

The Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada native will graduate in May with a degree in political science and is planning on pursuing law school at the Ohio State University Moritz College of Law. The 2013 NCAA Championship marks Stearns’ fourth appearance at the event.  Last year, he finished tied for third after playing an integral role in Ohio State’s title run and notched an event-best 19 wins in qualifying rounds. This year, he finished sixth overall at the NCAAs with 15 victories, 97 touches, and a +21 indicator.

The Elite 89, an award founded by the NCAA, recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers. The Elite 89 is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA’s championships.

Eligible student-athletes are sophomores or above who have participated in their sport for at least two years with their school. They must be an active member of the team, traveling and a designated member of the squad size at the championship. All ties are broken by the number of credits completed.
