The Buckeye fencing team competed for a final shot at earning bids to NCAA Championships, highlighted by three first place finishes that automatically qualify Eugenia Falqui (women’s epee), Lewis Weiss (men’s epee) and Maximilien Chastanet (men’s foil).
In women’s epee competition, Eugenia Falqui led the way, finishing in first place with 5 wins and a +14 indicator. Emma von Dadelszen finished right behind in second place, claiming 5 victories and a +3 indicator. Von Dadelszen’s second place finish is improved from a fourth place finish at last year’s event, her Midwest Regional debut. Falqui’s first place finish is an automatic qualification for NCAA Championships and is her second Midwest Regional title, placing first in 2015.
Alanna Goldie was the top Buckeye in women’s foil, claiming second place with eight victories and a +24 indicator in pool play. Eleanor Harvey claimed third place with six wins and a +17 indicator. Goldie and Harvey both placed second and third, respectively, in last year’s competition.
Sarah Merza claimed second place at her first Midwest Regional, with 12 victories and a +24 indicator. Alexa Antipas finished in seventh place, earning nine wins and a +11 indicator. The women’s sabre competition was the largest at Midwest Regionals, with 16 competitors.
The men’s epee unit was led by Lewis Weiss, who claimed his third Midwest Regional title in as many years. Weiss finished undefeated, with 11 wins and a +29 indicator. Marc-Antoine Blais Belanger claimed third place, earning eight wins and a +24 indicator. Blais Belanger also finished third at last year’s Midwest Regional.
In men’s foil, Maximilien Chastanet claimed his second Midwest Regional title in three years. Chastanet earned nine wins and a +28 indicator. Stas Sudilovsky finished close behind in second place, tallying eight victories and a +20 indicator. Julien Baneux rounded out the unit with a fifth place finish, winning 8 bouts and earning a +10 indicator.
Fares Arfa claimed second place in men’s sabre competition, finishing the day with nine victories and a +19 indicator. Frederik Koch claimed fifth place after winning 7 bouts in pool competition and earning a +13 indicator. In his first Midwest Regional, Domenik Koch claimed seventh place with seven wins and a +10 indicator.
NCAA Championship bids will be announced on March 14. The Buckeyes prepare for their post-season finale at NCAA Championships on March 23-26 in Indianapolis, Ind.
