COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Buckeye Fencing team will compete in the Midwest Fencing Championships this weekend at French Field House.
Twenty-three Midwest fencing teams will compete at the event. Individual competition is on Feb. 24 and team competition is on Feb. 25. There will be seven varsity teams in attendance - No. 9 Northwestern, Detroit Mercy, Wayne State, Cleveland State, Lawrence, and McKendree.
Admission and parking for the the event is free.
At last year's event, the team earned a total of five squad titles and three team titles. In individual competition, Buckeyes claimed titles in every weapon category and a total of 15 athletes earned medals.
Four Buckeyes return to the event to defend their individual titles. For the men, senior Frederik Koch is defending his sabre title while senior Lewis Weiss is defending his epee gold. Stas Sudilovsky will be making an effort to win a third straight foil title. For the women's squad, Sarah Merza will be defending her sabre title.
Among other returning top finishers from last year's championships include Emma von Dadelszen, Hector Florencia, Maximilien Chastanet, Julien Baneux, Marc-Antoine Blais Belanger and Oliver Shindler.
The Buckeyes have a total of 12 conference championships and have won the past four titles. Their longest win streak is seven years, from 2007 to 2013.
Following Midwest Championships, the Buckeyes head to Cleveland for NCAA Regional Qualifiers on March 10.
