Buckeyes Gear Up for Midwest Fencing Conference Championships
COLUMBUS, Ohio- The Ohio State fencing team is set to compete at the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships in Evanston, Ill., on Feb. 21.
This year it will only be a one-day, team-based competition with 22 teams involved. Among those teams are Northwestern, Bowling Green, Xavier, Case Western and many more. A full list of the teams competing can be seen below. Competition is set to begin at 9 a.m.
The Buckeyes claimed gold as a team at the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships last year, hosted in South Bend, Ind. Nine of the Scarlet and Gray claimed individual medals, highlighted by the women's sabre unit of Alexa Antipas, Celina Merza and Kimberly Young claimed gold, silver and one of the bronze, respectively.
Rhys Douglas for men's sabre and Kristian Boyadzhiev of men's epee were responsible for Ohio State's remaining gold medals. Mona Shaito and Eleanor Harvey claimed silver and bronze for women's foil, respectively, while Andrew McDonald, foil, and Bill Meyer, epee, took silver for their respective weapons.
The Buckeyes return to the strips Feb. 27 for the Division 1 Championships in Reno, Calif., before heading back to Evanston, Ill., for the NCAA Midwest Regional on March 7. Ohio State will host the 2015 NCAA Fencing Championships on March 19 to March 22, making it the second-consecutive year the Buckeyes have hosted the event.
