Ohio State Men, Women Perfect at Notre Dame Duals

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State's No. 1-ranked men's fencing team and No. 4-ranked women's squad both fashioned 8-0 records during the Notre Dame Duals, which concluded Sunday evening at the Joyce Center Fieldhouse in Notre Dame, Ind. The Buckeyes improve to 13-0 on the men's side and 10-3 on the women's side this season and host the Ohio State Duals in French Field House next weekend.

Against their only ranked opponent of the event, the Buckeye women topped No. 7 Northwestern, 14-13. The OSU women also defeated Lawrence 23-4, Oberlin 26-1, Detroit Mercy 23-4, Cleveland State 23-4, Chicago 27-0, Wayne State 17-10 and Duke 15-12.

The Ohio State men topped Lawrence 27-0, Oberlin 27-0, Detroit Mercy 26-1, Duke 25-2, Cleveland State 27-0, Chicago 26-1, Northwestern 23-4 and Wayne State 21-6.

OSU sophomore Amelia Gaillard (Fayetteville, Ga.), who placed seventh in the nation in sabre last year, went 14-2 in foil during the weekend in her first collegiate competition in that weapon. The Buckeye sabreists stepped up in her absence, however, as sophomore Siobhan Byrne (Eislingen, Germany) went 17-1, sophomore Eileen Grench (Davis, Calif.) went 15-3 and junior Syvenna Siebert (Upper Arlington, Ohio) went 13-5.

On the men's side, the Buckeyes' talented and deep sabre squad saw five of its members see action during the weekend, with three of them going undefeated. Senior Adam Crompton (Newark, N.J.) went 10-0, senior Jason Rogers (Los Angeles, Calif.) went 5-0 and freshman Mike Momtselidze (Kansas City, Mo.) went 10-0, while senior Zachary Parkins (The Woodlands, Texas) was 9-2 and junior Jason Paul (Los Angeles, Calif.) was 15-1.

In men's epee, junior Christian Rivera (Bloomfield, N.J.) led the way with a 13-1 mark.
