Both the Ohio State men and women's squads ranked in the Top-10 in the first 2014 CollegeFencing360 Coaches Poll, No. 6 and No. 5 respectively, released Jan. 22.
The Buckeye men's unit tallied 95 voting points to earn the No. 6 ranking. Returning All-Americans Zain Shaito and Chris Colley were mentioned as key fencers for the men's foil unit, while former fencer turned student assistant Marco Canevari was mentioned as a loss to the Buckeye epee unit. The Scarlet and Gray men's squad ended the 2013 season with a No. 6 ranking as well.
The Ohio State women's unit earned 110 voting points for their No. 5 ranking. The Coaches Poll highlights returning fencers Mona Shaito, Caroline Piasecka and Celina Merza as essential to the women's unit, while naming newcomers Kimberly Young and Alexa Antipas as promising additions. The Buckeyes fell one spot from their No. 4 final ranking of the 2013 season.
The CollegeFencing360 Coaches Poll is determined by the votes of 10 panelists for both the men and the women. Columbia earned the No. 1 ranking for the men's unit, followed by Penn State, Princeton, Notre Dame, Harvard, Ohio State, St. John's, Pennsylvania, Brown and Stanford. For the women's squad, Princeton was named No. 1 followed by Harvard, Notre Dame, Penn State, Ohio State, Columbia, Northwestern, Pennsylvania, Temple and St. John's.
The Buckeyes compete on Saturday at the NYU Invitational in New York, N.Y. and Sunday at the St. John's Invitational in Queens, N.Y. The next event hosted in Columbus, Ohio, will be the 2014 NCAA Championships, March 20-23.
