COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State fencing squad will compete Saturday at the St. John’s Invitational in Queens, N.Y., before moving into the city to compete in the NYU Invitational Sunday.
On Saturday, the defending national champion Scarlet and Gray will compete against St. John’s, Columbia, Notre Dame, Penn State and Harvard at the St. John’s Invitational with highlights airing on ESPN3.com. (Watch here.)
When the Buckeyes won the 2012 National Championship, Notre Dame (3), St. John’s (4) and Penn State (5) also finished in the Top 5 making them familiar opponents for the Buckeyes. Princeton, who will not participate on Saturday, earned second place.
Earlier this season, 12 Ohio State swashbucklers went head-to-head against Notre Dame fencers in an exhibition contest that resulted in the Buckeyes giving up a pair of wins. The Fighting Irish men's unit finished the relay 60-37 over Ohio State. The women’s group initially led the contest 40-39 but Notre Dame went ahead in the final bouts to take the win with a score of 60-51.
In 2011, Notre Dame won the National Championship but went on to give up their title to the Buckeyes in 2012.
Ten of the 2012 NCAA tournament participants for the Buckeyes will fence this weekend. For the men’s team, returners include Max Stearns and Rhys Douglas (men's sabre), Marco Canevari and Kristian Boyadzhiev (men's epee) and Zain Shaito and Chris Colley (men’s foil). Alison Miller (women's sabre), Katarzyna Dabrowa and Caroline Piasecka (women’s epee) and Mona Shaito (women's foil) are returning for the women’s squad.
On Sunday, the St. John’s, Notre Dame, and Ohio State fencers will all move across town to compete in the NYU Invitational. Other opponents on Sunday include NYU, Wayne State, Yale and North Carolina. The NYU Invitational begins at 8 a.m. Sunday.
Ohio State is 14-0 in duals this season, compiling all 14 wins against varsity and club opponents at the Ohio State Duals in October.
Following the two events this weekend, Ohio State will travel to Evanston, Ill. for the Northwestern Duals Saturday, Feb. 2.
