COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Buckeye Fencing squad heads to New York City to face off with five elite college fencing programs. St. John’s Invitational marks the first college fencing competition of the year for Ohio State, beginning at 10 a.m. at the Taffner Field House in Queens, N.Y.
Ohio State will compete against Penn State, St. John’s, Columbia, Harvard and Notre Dame, gaining experience against several of the nation’s top teams.
LAST TIME OUT
Previously held as a two day competition in conjunction with New York University, the event was cancelled last year due to impending inclement weather. Though the team’s last outing at St. John’s Invitational was two seasons ago, several fencers bring experience from the event.
The men’s and women’s squads each pulled off victories against two ranked opponents, ending the competition with a 4-6 record. The third-ranked men defeated No. 2 Notre Dame, 15-12, and No. 5 St. John’s, 15-12. The fifth-ranked women’s squad took down No. 4 Penn State, 17-10, and No. 7 Harvard, 16-11.
Following St. John’s Invitational, the Ohio State Fencing team will head to South Bend, Ind. for Northwestern Duals on Feb. 4-5.
