COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Buckeye fencing squad started off their 2017 season on a positive note, taking two medals at the first two days of competition in USA Fencing's January North American Cup at the Greater Columbus Convention Center.
Senior Eleanor Harvey came out on top in women's foil competition, defeating Columbia Fencing's Margaret Lu, 15-11. Harvey went undefeated in pool competition, earning six wins and a +18 indicator slotting her tied for ninth. In direct elimination, Harvey faced off with Columbia fencer Jackie Dubrovich, a rematch of the 2015 NCAA final that crowned Harvey champion. The Hamilton, Ontario native prevailed again, winning 15-4 and advancing to her final bout against Lu for first place.
Junior Marc-Antoine Blais Belanger also represented the Scarlet and Gray at the podium on Saturday, tying for third place in men's epee competition. Blais Belanger finished pool competition with four victories and a +9 indicator, beginning direct elimination tied for 23rd. The Montréal, Quebec native powered through his bouts to the semifinals, including a defeat over Egyptian fencer and world No. 15 Ayman Fayez, 15-12. Blais Belanger fell to St. John's fencer Curtis McDowald in the semifinal round, 15-8, finishing with a bronze medal.
Competition will continue on Sunday and Monday beginning at 8 a.m. on both days.
