Ohio State Fencing Completes Competition at OSU Invitational
Six Buckeyes obtained medals at the OSU Invitational
COLUMBUS, Ohio- The Ohio State fencing team collected six medals at the OSU Invitational, today, hosted in French Field House. The men’s squad ended the day 4-1, while the women’s squad completed competition with a 2-3 record.
Freshman Marc-Antoine Blais Belanger earned a first place finish in men’s epee with a 15-9 victory over Penn’s R.J. Shipp. He was seeded third with an 11-4 record in regular competition, while teammate Bill Meyer earned the top seed, 12-3. Meyer fell to Shipp in the first round, 15-8.
Senior Celina Merza also garnered gold for the Scarlet and Gray, having earned the top seed in women’s sabre with a 12-3 record. Merza worked her way through competitors to claim the top prize, defeating opponents 15-5, 15-5 and 15-12. Sophomore Alexa Antipas secured a spot in the final rounds with a 9-6 record, but dropped her bout to eventual finalist Johanna Thill of Notre Dame, 15-11.
In men’s sabre, Rhys Douglas led the Buckeyes with a second place finish after meriting the fourth place seed with an 11-4 record. Douglas defeated freshman teammate Andrew Herczak, 15-10, in the first round. Fares Arfa obtained a second place seed with an 11-4 record but did not advance past the first round.
Sophomore Eugenia Falqui captured silver in women’s epee having earned the top seed, 12-3.
Senior Chris Colley was the only Buckeye to acquire a top 8 spot in men’s foil. Colley had an 11-4 record in regular competition, securing the top seed, but fell to eventual champion Nobuo Bravo from Penn State, 15-9, in the first round.
Sophomores Alanna Goldie, 10-5, and Eleanor Harvey, 9-6, earned positions in the top 8 for women’s foil. Both advanced to the second round with 15-6 victories. Goldie ended in second and Harvey tied for third once competition concluded.
Ohio State returns to action for two days of competition at the Penn State Open, hosted at University Park, Pa., on Nov. 22-23.
