COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State fencing team, 2012 NCAA Champion, gave up a pair of exhibition wins Saturday to the Notre Dame fencing team in the first official matches held at the new Castellan Family Fencing Center in Notre Dame, Ind.
For the men's team, the modified relay exhibition consisted of two bouts sabre followed by four bouts epee and concluded with four bouts foil. The Fighting Irish men's unit finished the relay 60-37 over Ohio State.
Senior Max Stearns (sabre) led the team by splitting his bouts, losing 8-10 to his first opponent while coming back to win his second bout 12-6.
On the women's side, the modified relay included four bouts epee, succeeded by four bouts sabre and ending with four bouts foil. The women initially led the contest 40-39 but Notre Dame went ahead in the final bouts to take the win with a score of 60-51.
Sophomore Celina Merza (sabre) won both of her bouts, 9-7 and 5-4, respectively. Other highlights for the Buckeyes include Caroline Piasecka who defeated one of her opponents 6-3 and Alison Miller who also won one of her match-ups.
Overall, 12 Buckeyes competed at the Notre Dame Individual. The Buckeyes return to the strips on Nov. 9 at the Division I NAC in Virginia Beach, Va.
