COLUMBUS, Ohio - Spurred by freshman Mona Shaito's flawless day, the Ohio State fencing team is tied for first following the conclusion of the first day of women's competition at the 2012 NCAA Championships, hosted by the Buckeyes inside French Field House.

Ohio State collected 51 victories Thursday, enough to plant the team at the top alongside Notre Dame and Penn State.

The event continues at 9:30 a.m. Friday morning with the final day of women's bouts. Semifinal and championship contests are scheduled to begin at 1:45 p.m. Friday inside St. John Arena and will be aired live on ESPN3.com The men begin at 10 a.m. Saturday and continue through Sunday. The Scarlet and Gray are third in foil, fourth in epee and tied for fifth in sabre.

Shaito leads all fencers with 14 victories as she claimed each of her bouts through the first four rounds of pool play. Fellow foilist Allison Henvick added four wins to the team's total and sits in 19th.

Katarzyna Dabrowa positioned herself for a Final Four run by finishing fourth with 11 victories in epee. The sophomore from Wroclaw, Poland, defeated both Ashley Severson and Nicole Ameli of Notre Dame in the first round. Severson and Ameli finished fifth and sixth, respectively.

Caroline Piasecka is just three wins off Dabrowa's record with eight wins, good for 10th place.

Buckeye sabreists Margarita Tschomakova and Alison Miller finished the day back-to-back at 13th and 14th, respectively. Each fencer picked up seven victories, but Tschomakova's +5 indicator earned the tiebreak. Tschomakova handed Duke's Rebecca Ward, who finished second, her only loss of the day in the fourth round, 5-4.
