COLUMBUS, Ohio- Freshman Alanna Goldie tied for third in women's foil for the Ohio State Fencing team, now ranked third after the second day of competition at the 2014 NCAA Fencing Championships. Goldie fell to eventual champion Lee Kiefer from Notre Dame, 15-11, in the semi-finals.
Mona Shaito missed the semi-finals for foil by one touch, finishing fifth in the event. Shaito tallied 16 victories with a +28 indicator, while Goldie accumulated 16 victories with a +29 indicator.
In women's sabre, freshman Alexa Antipas reached the podium, finishing sixth with 16 victories and 102 touches scored. Teammate Celina Merza finished ninth in the competition with 14 victories and 92 touches scored.
Championship bouts consisted of inter-school competition, with two fencers from the same school squaring off: Harvard in sabre, Notre Dame in foil and Stanford in epee.
The Buckeyes are ranked third after the second day of championships, behind Princeton and Penn State. The Scarlet and Gray tallied 81 victories with a +70 indicator and 517 touches scored.
The 2014 NCAA Championships resume Saturday with rounds 1-3 of men's competition beginning at 9:30 a.m. in French Field House.
