SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Ohio State fencing team ended Notre Dame’s two-year reign as Midwest Fencing Conference champions Sunday, a day after three Buckeyes claimed individual titles. Led by head coach Vladimir Nazlymov, the squad has won eight of the last 10 conference championships.

Ohio State now turns its gaze to NCAA championship qualifying, traveling to Cleveland, Ohio, March 11 for the Midwest Qualifier.
 
The Scarlet and Gray edged Northwestern, 660 to 635, to win the women’s championship and boost the team’s cumulative score past hosting Notre Dame, 1,305 to 1,270. Ohio State earned weapon championships in women’s epee and sabre, as well as men’s epee, after reaching the title match in all six categories.
 
In women’s epee, the top-seeded Buckeyes took down Northwestern in the final, 5-3, powered by Katarzyna Dabrowa’s 3-0 effort. The sophomore finished 9-0 overall. Caroline Piasecka added six wins while Tasha Domashovetz collected five.
 
With a number two seed in women’s sabre, Ohio State advanced past Bowling Green (5-0), Detroit (5-0) and Northwestern (5-1) to reach the final against first seed Notre Dame. Up 4-2, Alison Miller’s 5-1 win over Abigail Nichols gave the Buckeyes the victory. Celina Merza’s seven wins led the unit.
 
Earlier in the day, Ohio State’s men’s epee squad earned the first weapon title for the team with a 5-1 victory over second-seeded Notre Dame. Igor Tolkachev and Marco Canevari both finished 2-0 against the Irish.
 
Men’s foil and sabre both finished runner-up to Notre Dame, while Northwestern edged women’s foil, 5-4. Chris Colley led men’s foil with a 7-0 record, while Ewan Douglas and Max Stearns both compiled a 7-1 ledger in men’s sabre. Women’s foilist Mona Shaito led all Buckeye fencers with 10 victories, including 3-0 showings against Northwestern and Notre Dame.
