Ohio State Fencing Team Come Out on Top at Northwestern Duals

Ohio State fencing team performed well at the Northwestern Duals, Saturday, in Evanston, Ill., dropping only one round to the No. 1 Princeton women’s squad. The No. 5 women’s squad ended the day, 6-1, while the No. 6 men’s squad finished, 8-0.
The Buckeye men’s squad defeated No. 3 Princeton, 15-12, highlighted by the epee unit’s performance, 7-2, led by Kristian Boyadzhiev, who won all three of his bouts. The men’s squad came out on top in all of their rounds, including vs. No. 8 Penn and vs. No. 10 Stanford.
The women’s squad started out strong in the first round vs. Duke. The foil unit went undefeated, 9-0, while the sabre unit and epee unit both tallied victories, 8-1 and 6-3 respectively. The women’s foil unit followed up with 9-0 records against Stanford and against UCSD.
Alanna Goldie led the women’s foil unit, 16-1, while Celina Merza and Kimberly Young had strong performances for the sabre squad, 15-2 and 17-4 respectively. Caroline Piasecka, who was honored by CollegeFencing360 for her performance at the St. John’s Invitational and the NYU Invitational in the Primetime Performers Weekly Honor Roll, tallied a 10-2 score for the epee unit.
The Buckeyes return to the strips for the Notre Dame Duals in South Bend, Ind., on Feb. 8. The next home event will be the 2014 NCAA Championships on March 20 to March 23.
