Associate Head Coach

Alexander Smerdin enters his 14th season as an assistant coach for the OSU epee squad. A native of Kyrgyzstan, Smerdin brings with him over 20 years of coaching experience. He was the Soviet Union Fencing Champion in 1991 and was a West Asian Games Champion in 1997. A two-time member of the Soviet National Team, Smerdin also earned a silver medal in the 1999 Central Asian Games and placed third at the NAC in 2000.

Smerdin, who won the 2001 Ohio State Open, coached former Buckeye standout Alexandra Shklar, who won the NAC in 2000 and placed third there in 2003.
