Athlete of the Week
• Ohio State sophomore Deshaun Thomas earned his first career Big Ten Player of the Week award Dec. 19 after leading the No. 2 Buckeyes to a pair of wins over South Carolina (76-66, Dec. 17) and USC Upstate (82-58, Dec. 14). Thomas averaged 26.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists last week while posting a career-high 30 points against South Carolina.

Athletics
• Ohio State student-athletes from eight different sports took time from their studies last week to visit area middle schools as part of the Big Brothers Big Sisters Project Mentor program. Project Mentor, which pairs area youth with adult mentors, focuses on helping students develop a sense of future and improve academics. Volunteers come from more than 80 business and community partners, as well as the community at large.

Baseball

• Ohio State sophomore 1B/RHP Josh Dezse has been named to the 12th annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association preseason All-America Third Team.

No. 2 Men's Basketball (10-1, 0-0 Big Ten)
Head coach: Thad Matta
Deshaun Thomas scored 23 points and No. 2 Ohio State welcomed back star forward Jared Sullinger in an 82-58 victory over South Carolina-Upstate Dec. 14.
• Thomas scored a career high 30 points and No. 2 Ohio State overcame the loss of Sullinger to defeat South Carolina 74-66 Dec. 17 and give Thad Matta his 200th win as Buckeyes coach.

No. 12 Women's Basketball (10-0, 0-0 Big Ten)
Head coach: Jim Foster
Tayler Hill had 21 points, four assists and five steals in 29 minutes to lead No. 12 Ohio State to an 83-49 victory over Southern University Dec. 13.
Samantha Prahalis had 20 points and six assists and Ohio State held off California 77-75 Dec. 17 to remain unbeaten and give coach Jim Foster his 750th career victory.

Football (6-6, 3-5 Big Ten)
Head coach: Luke Fickell
• Ohio State junior defensive lineman John Simon has been named a third-team Associated Press All-American, the news service announced Dec. 14.

Men's Gymnastics
Head coach: Rustam Sharipov
• Ohio State was picked fourth in the Big Ten Men's Gymnastics Preseason Coaches' Poll, the conference office announced Dec. 14. In addition, sophomores Kris Done and Misha Koudinov have been named Gymnasts to Watch in the conference.

Women's Gymnastics
Head coach: Carey Fagan
• Ohio State was picked fourth in the Big Ten Preseason Coaches' Poll, the conference office announced Dec. 14. In addition, junior Colleen Dean and sophomore Sarah Miller have been named Gymnasts to Watch in the conference.

Men's Track and Field
Head coach: Robert Gary
• Junior Heath Nickles was named co-Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week Dec. 12 by the conference office after his record-setting performance last Saturday at the Kent State Golden Flash Gala.

Women's Volleyball (21-15, 9-11 Big Ten)
Head coach: Geoff Carlston
• Ohio State juniors Mari Hole and Emily Danks were named AVCA Honorable Mention All-America, the organization announced Dec. 14. The selections were made by the AVCA Division I All-America Committee and the honor is the first for both Hole and Danks.

No. 6 Wrestling (7-0, 1-0 Big Ten)
Head coach: Tom Ryan
• Behind seven wins and an Indiana forfeit, No. 6 Ohio State defeated the Hoosiers, 31-9, in both teams' Big Ten Conference opener Dec. 18 in St. John Arena. The Buckeyes remain undefeated with a 7-0 record and are now 1-0 in the league, while Indiana falls to 6-1 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
