Oct. 28, 2013
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State Department of Athletics held its annual 1888 Society Fall Luncheon Friday afternoon at The Blackwell, recognizing and thanking endowment holders and providing an opportunity for them to meet with the student-athletes they sponsor.
The luncheon opened with a speech from women's gymnastics head coach Carey Fagan thanking those in attendance for their support.
"When a scholarship is endowed to a particular student-athlete, it helps the entire athletic department," Fagan said. "The Ohio State athletic department is a family and when you help someone in our family, you help all of us. On behalf of all of the coaches, student-athletes and staff at Ohio State, thank you to all of the donors for all of your generous support; we couldn't be Buckeye nation without you."
Sarah Miller, a senior on the women's gymnastics team, expressed her gratitude to the Tomski family, whose support has allowed her to attend Ohio State.
"With the help of the Tomski family, my dreams of receiving an education and competing in the sport I love became a reality," Miller said. "As student-athletes, we are appreciative of everyone who takes their time, support and dedication and gives it to us. I would like to give a special thanks to the Tomski family, who has become so influential throughout my life. Each and every donor, every endowment and every scholarship can never receive enough thanks for how much it helps every single student-athlete."
Amy Scullion, a redshirt junior on the women's basketball team, conveyed appreciation for the aid she's received throughout her career as a Buckeye.
"It's a really unique experience because not only does this scholarship help me in my academic pursuits, but the relationship that I've been able to build with my endowment holder has helped me tremendously in my personal life," Scullion said. "The insight and experiences she's had throughout her life inspire me to be better."
The luncheon closed with the endowment holders in attendance meeting and taking photos with the student-athletes they sponsor.
