Gene Smith and Ohio Senator Jim Hughes
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Gene Smith, Ohio State Senior Vice President and Wolfe Foundation Endowed Athletics Director, has been recognized with a Resolution from the Senate of the 131st General Assembly of Ohio. The resolution was honoring Smith for named the 2016 Athletics Director of the Year by Sports Business Journal. Senator Jim Hughes presented the proclamation to Smith.
The 2016 award from SBJ was the second for Smith, who also won the 2010 SBJ AD of the Year award and was a finalist in 2008 SBJ AD. Smith helped guide Ohio State athletics to extraordinary success in 2015-16. Ohio State finished second in the 2016 Directors' Cup and had a record 561 scholar-athletes (3.0 grade-point average or better). During the year, the men’s volleyball team and pistol squad won national titles and 11 Buckeyes claimed individual national championships.
Smith is in his 12th year leading the Ohio State Department of Athletics.
