Athletes of the Week

  • Senior tri-captain Jenn Sciulli led the No. 18 Field Hockey Buckeyes to a 2-0 shutout victory at No. 8 Penn State Oct. 22, collecting a goal and assist against the Nittany Lions. Sciulli, a native of Palmyra, Pa., is third on the team with a season-high 14 points (4g, 6a) and is second in the nation with nine defensive saves in 2011. The OSU back held Penn State scoreless, who came into the game ranked sixth in the country in scoring average (3.83).

  • Blaz Rola wrapped up his successful run at the 2011 USTA/ITA Division I Men's Midwest Regional Championships by capturing his second consecutive regional title. Rola, the top seed in the draw, defeated Evan King of Michigan 6-3, 6-4 Oct. 17 at the Varsity Tennis Center in Columbus. The sophomore's victory marked the fifth time in six seasons a Buckeye has captured the singles crown and the first time in history an Ohio State player has claimed the honor in back-to-back seasons.

  • Ryan Leffel's solo home run to left in the bottom of the sixth kept Scarlet alive with a 5-4 win in Game 3 of the Scarlet & Gray World Series Oct. 21 at Bill Davis Stadium.
  • Gray no-hit Scarlet behind a strong pitching performance from Brad Goldberg and a huge day from Mike Carroll and ran away with a 13-0 series-ending victory in game 4 of the Scarlet & Gray World Series Oct. 22 at Bill Davis Stadium.

    Men's Basketball

  • Ohio State student season tickets for the Buckeye men's basketball team sold out in 45 minutes Oct. 22. A total of 1,400 tickets, all in the lower bowl of Value City Arena, were ordered online by students starting at 10 a.m.

    Men's Cross Country
    Head coach: Robert Gary

  • Fifteen members of the Ohio State men's cross country team competed at the 5k Eastern Michigan Fall Classic Oct. 21. The meet offered an excellent opportunity for a number of Buckeye freshmen and sophomores to test their legs against a quality field. For OSU's veterans, the race provided a challenging warm-up for next weekend's trip to the Big Ten championships.

    No. 18 Field Hockey (10-7, 3-2 Big Ten)

  • No. 18 Ohio State defeated Miami (Ohio), 2-1, Oct. 18 in Oxford, Ohio. The Buckeyes posted a pair of goals en route to the victory against the RedHawks in their last non-conference matchup of the 2011 regular season.
  • No. 18 Ohio State posted a 2-0 shutout at No. 8 Penn State Oct. 22 at the Penn State Field Hockey Complex in State College, Pa.

    Football (4-3, 1-2 Big Ten)

  • Ohio State junior tight end Jake Stoneburner was named Oct. 17 to the midseason watch list for the John Mackey Award, given annually to the nation's top tight end by the Nassau (N.Y.) County Sports Commission. He is one of 25 individuals under consideration for the award and one of only four from the Big Ten Conference (Northwestern's Drake Dunsmore, Wisconsin's Jacob Pedersen and Nebraska's Kyler Reed are the others).

    Men's Ice Hockey (3-3, 2-2 CCHA)

  • Max McCormick has been named the CCHA Gongshow Rookie of the Week, the Central Collegiate Hockey Association announced Oct. 17. McCormick had a team-best three points in the Buckeyes' series split at then-No. 2 ranked Notre Dame.
  • Ohio State lost to Michigan State, 3-0, in a Central Collegiate Hockey Association game at Munn Ice Arena in East Lansing, Mich., Oct. 20. Buckeye senior goalie Cal Heeter made 27 saves, but the Spartans scored once in each period for the victory.
  • Three unanswered third-period goals led Ohio State to a 5-2 victory over Michigan State Oct. 21 at Munn Ice Arena in East Lansing, Mich.

    Women's Ice Hockey (3-2-1)

  • Ohio State senior forward Laura McIntosh was named WCHA Offensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced Oct. 19. The honor is the first of the season for McIntosh and the third of her career.
  • Ohio State fell, 11-1, at No. 7 North Dakota Oct. 21 in Grand Forks, N.D.
  • Ohio State women's ice hockey team fell, 7-1, at No. 7 North Dakota in game two of a WCHA series in Grand Forks, N.D.

    Men's Lacrosse
    Head coach: Nick Myers

  • On a beautiful day in Columbus, the Ohio State men's lacrosse team closed out its fall schedule with the inaugural CJD Memorial Fall Classic. The event featured three games involving Ohio State, Canisius and Ohio Wesleyan and was played at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium and fields outside the Woody Hayes Athletic Center in Columbus. The CJD Memorial Fall Classic honored the life of and lives saved by Colleen J. Dobbins, the daughter of Ohio State assistant coach Dave Dobbins and his wife, Erin. Colleen passed away suddenly at Nationwide Children's Hospital March 24, 2011, at 5 ½ months old. With the help of Lifeline of Ohio and Nationwide Children's Hospital, Colleen became an organ donor and saved the lives of two other children.

  • Ohio State defeated the defending national collegiate champion, the U.S. Military Academy (Army) Oct. 22 at the OSU Buckeye Invitational in Converse Hall, 6,365 to 6,344. The Buckeyes won only one of three open events (free pistol) but the margin was enough to offset Army's wins in standard and air pistol. OSU outscored Army 2,059 to 1,969 in free pistol but Army won standard pistol, 2,159 to 2,124 and free pistol, 2,216 to 2,182.

    Men's Soccer (8-5-2, 3-1-0 Big Ten)

  • Austin McAnena scored in the 96th minute to give Ohio State a 1-0 overtime win vs. Penn State Oct. 23 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

    Women's Soccer (9-8-1, 4-5-1 Big Ten)
    Head coach: Lori Walker

  • Ohio State picked up a crucial 1-0 road victory Oct. 21 at Michigan. The Buckeyes scored the game's only goal in the 77th minute, on a long strike from 25 yards by Chelsy Swackhamer off an assist by Paige Maxwell.
  • Ohio State dropped a 2-0 decision Oct. 23 at Michigan State.

    Men's Tennis

  • Rola was named Big Ten Athlete of the Week Oct. 19. It is the second consecutive week the Ptuj, Slovenia, native has been recognized by the conference office.

    Men's Track

  • Members of the Ohio State men's track and field team recently took time out of their busy schedules to lend a helping hand in the community. Twenty-eight sprinters, hurdlers, jumpers and middle distance runners collected canned goods in the Westerville area for nearly six hours last Saturday that was donated to the Mid-Ohio Food Bank in Grove City. It was time well spent as team members collected close to 1,000 pounds of food, which is enough to feed 1,000 hungry families.

    No. 23 Women's Volleyball (15-8, 5-5 Big Ten)

  • 23rd-ranked Ohio State lost a 3-0 (28-26, 25-18, 25-15) decision at ninth-ranked Penn State Oct. 19 in Rec Hall before a crowd of 2,106.
  • 23rd-ranked Ohio State overcame a two-point loss in the first set to Michigan State to win 3-1 (23-25, 25-23, 25-19, 25-21) over the Spartans in front of 1,431 fans Oct. 22.
