Athletes of the Week

  • Danica Deckard, a junior forward field hockey team, helped the squad to two victories last week against Ball State Sept. 27 and No. 13 Indiana Sept. 30. The native of Selinsgrove, Pa., Deckard posted nine points on four goals and one assist in the two Buckeye wins. Deckard, who is tied for first on the team with 18 points (8g,2a), has tallied 13 points (6g,1a) in the last three games for the Scarlet and Gray - who are currently on a five-game win streak. In the 5-0 win at Ball State, Deckard notched her first career hat trick with a career-high seven points against the Cardinals. The OSU forward continued her offensive surge against the Hoosiers when she gave the Buckeyes an early 1-0 lead in the first half to help the team improve to 2-0 in conference play. Deckard leads the team with four gamewinning goals and is first in the Big Ten in goals per game (league games only) with a 1.50 mark.

  • Amanda Peterson directed the women's volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep of No. 10 Minnesota posting 41 assists, four kill, five digs, four block assists and one ace serve. She had 40 assists, four kills, 10 digs, one solo block and two assist blocks against Wisconsin. Her 10 digs against Wisconsin equaled her career high set at Nebraska this season and her four assist blocks against Minnesota equals her season high set at West Virginia.

    No. 25 Men's Cross Country

  • Battling poor weather, a wet course and talented competition, Ohio State finished 12th out of 26 teams at the 8k Notre Dame Invitational Sept. 30. Junior Donny Roys led the Buckeye effort, turning in a 24th-place time of 24:44.

  • Ohio State Ohio finished 13th out of 28 teams at the 5k Notre Dame Invitational Sept. 30. Redshirt senior Jordan Jennewine was the top Buckeye finisher on the day, placing 37th in 17:42.

    Field Hockey (7-5, 2-0 Big Ten)

  • Junior Danica Deckard notched her first career hat trick in a 5-0 win at Ball State Sept. 27.
  • Deckard also was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week by the conference office on Sept. 27 based on her two goal performance in an upset of Michigan the week prior.
  • The Buckeyes withstood a late offensive charge by Indiana to defeat the 13th-ranked Hoosiers 3-2 at Buckeye Varsity Field Sept. 30. Paula Pastor-Pitarque claimed a team-high three points with a goal and an assist in the first half.

  • No. 25 Michigan State withstood a late rally from Ohio State to escape Ohio Stadium with a 10-7 win Oct. 1 in the conference opener for both teams. The 105,306 fans in attendance at the Horseshoe witnessed a defensive battle as the Spartans and their aggressive, blitzing defense limited the Buckeye offense to 178 total yards.

  • The Buckeyes opened their 2011-12 campaign with a 6-5 victory over Windsor in an exhibition game Oct. 1 at Chiller North. Sophomore Chris Crane, who had two goals and two assists, led the Buckeyes with four points, while freshman Ryan Dzingel had three assists. Senior Danny Dries and freshman Riley Simpson each had a goal and a helper for two points.

    Women's Ice Hockey

  • Scarlet topped Gray 4-3 in the annual Scarlet and Gray game Sept. 30 at the OSU Ice Rink. Freshman Taylor Kuehl finished with three points, scoring two goals and dishing out an assist for Scarlet. Senior Natalie Spooner tallied a goal and an assist, while netting a shot during the shootout at the end of the game for Gray.

    Men's Soccer (6-4-1, 2-0-0 Big Ten)
    Head coach: John Bluem

  • Chris Hegngi was named Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of Week by the conference office Sept. 26. The junior forward scored the game-winning goal in the Buckeyes' 3-2 overtime victory over Michigan Sept. 25.
  • Ohio State dropped a 3-1 decision on the road to fourth-ranked and unbeaten Akron Sept. 28 at FirstEnergy Stadium - Cub Cadet Field in front of a stadium-record 5,819 fans. Trailing by two, Sebastian Rivas scored the lone goal for the Buckeyes, finishing off a pass from Omar Vallejo to cut the lead to 2-1 with about 17 minutes to play in regulation. The Zips added their third goal in the 82nd minute, however, to foil the comeback attempt.
  • The Buckeyes topped Michigan State, 2-1, Oct. 2 at DeMartin Soccer Complex in East Lansing, Mich. Chris Gomez and Hegngi each found the back of the net for Ohio State as it captured its seventh-consecutive victory against Michigan State to improve to 2-0 in conference for the second year in a row. All three goals scored in the game were within a six and a half minute span in the first half, beginning in the ninth minute and ending with Hegngi's game winner in the 15th.

  • Katie Baumgardner was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week Sept. 26 after recording nine saves in a pair of wins over Northwestern and Illinois.
  • The Scarlet and Gray could not hold off a second-half Penn State attack as the 24th-ranked Nittany Lions posted a 3-1 win in Big Ten play Sept. 29 at Jeffrey Field. Tiffany Cameron gave the Buckeyes a 1-0 lead heading into the break, but PSU tallied three goals in the first eight minutes of the second half to capture the win.
  • Ohio State defeated league-leading Wisconsin 1-0 at the McClimon Soccer Complex in Madison Oct. 2, ending the Badgers' nine-game Big Ten home win streak. In the 48th minute, Cameron, with her fifth goal of the season, finished off a corner kick with a shot that ricocheted off the right post for the only score of the match.

    No. 24 Women's Volleyball (12-5, 2-2 Big Ten)

  • Ohio State earned a 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 28-26) sweep of 10th-ranked Minnesota (8-4, 1-2) Sept. 30 in front of 1,575 fans in St. John Arena. Mari Hole posted a team-high 17 points with 16 kills (.467) and one ace. Emily Danks added 10.5 points with seven kills (.300), three ace serves and one assist block, while Mariah Booth contributed 10 points with nine kills (.500) and two assist blocks.
  • 24th-ranked Ohio State fell, 3-1 (25-16, 25-20, 21-25, 25-10) to Wisconsin (10-6, 2-2) Oct. 2 in St. John Arena in front of 1,215 fans. OSU's Danks posted a match-high 16.5 points with 14 kills (.220), two ace serves and one assist block. Hole added 12 points for the Buckeyes with 11 kills (.000) and two assist blocks.
