COLUMBUS, Ohio - In a survey released Wednesday by social media agency Jumpwire, Ohio State athletics was rated No. 1 in a national ranking table measuring digital media success. The Buckeye athletics department, which recently turned in its best campaign in the annual Learfield Directors' Cup standings, year-in and year-out boasts the largest fan base on social media, topping more than 3.5 million followers on numerous platforms.
The Jumpwire survey, the first of its kind for collegiate social media, based its rankings on six key metrics on six major social media channels. Ohio State recorded a score of 97 out of a possible 100. North Carolina finished second with a 55/100, while Oregon and USC tied for third at 48/100 and Florida rounded out the Top 5 at 43/100.
"Ohio State has a significantly higher score than all of the schools in our social media index at 97," Dion Caputi, Content Creator and Community Manager at Jumpwire, said on a podcast dedicated to the rankings. "North Carolina is second at 55. There is a massive gap. Ohio State is at a level of its own. And the reason why is they where a leader or near leader in all six of the metrics that we focused on. Because of that they were very high on our ranking. No one comes near them right now."

Jumpwire.com - We created the ranking table below as a way to compare how university athletic departments in the United States were doing on social media.
We wanted to determine if there was a correlation between how a school did on the field with how they performed on social media. It turns out that 6 of the top 10 schools on the Learfield Director's Cup spring standings were also in the top 10 of our social media ranking.
To create the ranking we tracked 6 social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Google Plus, Pinterest, and Instagram). We focused on 6 key metrics for each school: Audience (number of fans), Engagement (total likes, comments, and shares across all channels), Activity (# of posts), Amplification (sharing), Applause (likes), and Conversation (comments). We then averaged each of the 6 metrics to give us a final social media score for each of the schools.
